Yes, Hedychium gardnerianum - the ginger Pete was referring to immediately before.

Very right about patience Pete, although many Hedychiums are not too slow to show what they're about. I've been 'playing' with them for a while now and am trying to develop a strain or line of hybrids that are compact, reasonably early flowering, very hardy, colourful and fragrant.

It's a bit of a tall order, but after 8 years I think I'm nearly there. Generally first flowers from a cross take about 3 years, but you can be sure that the best are amongst the slowest so they may not show for 4 or 5 years. I've got one or two more crosses to make using the existing plants and I'm sure that amongst them will be the plant or plants I'm looking for.

One of my day lilys has decided to send up a couple more flower spikes. I thought it had finished for the year.

Primulas in bud and so are some narcissus - in September!! Very heavy rain last night put the lawn under water. Great flood swept down the hill, into my drive, poured into the garage where it rose to a depth of 2 feet. Greenhouse paving under water too, but luckily the heater is off the floor. House ok as it is raised well above ground level. No lasting damage but a great tide line of flotsam and jetsom half way down the garden. Pond overflowed too. Don't you just love extreme weather?
