Japanese anemone was my thought too - are the new unfurling leaves slightly hairy?

Our snakes head fritillaries are also at least a week away from flowering, and I’m in sunny Surrey. But the anticipation is building …. Love their little chessboards

Look like a Jap. anem to me too :)
I've got one variety which has a few leaves appearing. It's always earlier than the other varieties I have. They work well with Camassias, so it's very likely. I have J. Anem. Whirlwind in with those.
The tiny bit top left is very distinctive.

        Love that Epimedium @Athelas

Berberis darwinii, prickly but easy to grow and the berries are popular with blackbirds.

Iberis sempervirens, a good evergreen sub-shrub for walls and edging.

I don't remember putting any in there, lol! I put two about ten feet away 2 years ago, but they didn't come back. Maybe they've been tunnelling to find a better space.

A little bit of sun makes a difference! This is the view across my lower garden today, showing bulbs and grasses emerging, including daffodils, tulips, Anemone blanda, Hakonechloa macra
and Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster', plus some Hostas in pots and Euphorbias.

Oh I hope it is Japanese anemones! I definitely don't remember even buying any more - there was cosmos there last year..lol!! That came free with the camassia.
I'll have a closer look at the leaves in a bit.

I've got some Japanese anemones that did a disappearing act for a couple of years too @Mrs. B. This looks like yours but it's showing off after scoffing some of the BF&B I put nearby for a clematis! :yay:

Certainly sounds like a Jap. anem seedling that's found a nice little spot @Mrs. B.
The white Jap. anems certainly like moist ground, so maybe that's why yours have been a bit shy of late @Plantminded . No Berberis flowering here yet, or Iberis, although I have a few little cuttings that are now small plants and they have buds on them.
There's a beautiful, huge Berberis just along the road from me, near the entrance to the wee NT garden, I always mean to get a pic when it's inflower, but I never remember. Must try harder.

I think you’re right about the dryness @fairygirl, I’ll get to work with some mulch in that area soon! There’s a nice small leaved Berberis I noticed today in my local M&S car park, it would make a good hedge.

In our nearby Arboretum this wonderful Mimosa planted as a special memory to a dear neighbour sadly lost 10 years ago. Photos don't do it justice

My thousands of Daffs are up, some blood root blooming, little blue flowers carpeting the front lawn nicely, lots of Virginia Blue bells up and budding.

Its done well to survive 10yrs John, I would have expected the December 2022 freeze to have wiped it out.
