        @CarolineL I have had that M salignus in the ground for 12 years and is the hardiest one I have taking -7c without damage where others have died eg Citrinus Splendens, White Anzac, or been scorched, laevis and Perth Pink and viminalis Hot Pink. I may have given @pete the seed many years ago.

          Thanks @strongylodon - I have rigidus, seedlings from a plant I grew in my mum's garden more than 50 years ago - and it was still there up to 5 years ago! But captain cook variety died here. I have another red one (from pruning at Wales Botanic Garden) which has bigger bright flowers than rigidus, but I suspect too iffy to put outside

            Thanks @Ante1 - looking good. My plant has only just started breaking leaf.
            I'll post another plant breaking leaf - rhododendron falconeri.

            A friend gave it after finding it discarded and very potbound. I have hopes of putting it in my wooded area once it has had some TLC. The new leaves are like felt!
