Stainless wooden handled trowel, good pair of secateurs and just for fun an ancient tool which looks like a giant corkscrew for getting at tough roots.

For doing what? If a hammer is all someone has then every problem becomes a nail.

Horticultural tools are too often ill-designed to be fit-for purpose.

 

Use it for removing roots - the fun bit is when people really do think it's a corkscrew.

Definitely my issued jungle knife. Never mind the weeds it will cut down trees, great for digging and totally unbreakable.... Jiffy you need to get one!

 

Surely the finest tool of all is membership of Gardener's Corner !!

Just purchased a mini pick mattock - this little beauty is invaluable for lifting compacted clay soil . Saves loads of time which would have otherwise been spent digging over with a fork and spade.
