I don't know what it went down to, but the tape on Dog's retractable lead was freezing solid on our first walk this morning.

It was minus 1.5C when I got up at 5.30am, when I left for work it had dropped to minus 3C.
Dont think it went any lower than that.
Sunny most of the day, so better than yesterday, and none of that horrible wind.

Because of the clear skies last night I was out in the Observatory until just gone 2am and the thermometer inside recorded 20f/-6C, while the inside of the Dome Roof was glistening with ice and frost.:hate-shocked: So today the skies have been clear and the temperature has never gone above freezing. This morning on my morning amble around the garden it was 21f but cloud slowly appeared around 6pm and the temperature is, for the first time today above freezing at 34f. So the snow is still on the ground while rain is forecast during the night and tomorrow, with the pressure at the moment reading 984hpa.:coffee::snorky:

We've had our first snowfall in almost 8 years, a good amount around 5" .

Today has been sunny all day . Starting temperature was -7 , now at 10pm it's 6 degrees.

How can you have a 13 degree difference in one Wintry day ?

I live on a small hill going at right angles down to a main A road and it's starting to melt and run down like a stream. It's a good job that the temperature isn't gonna drop below 6 deg during the next 3 days.

We were down to -4C and 7" of snow the other day and yesterday, when I went to feed the birds, I noticed that some of the Verbena were still in flower! I don't know yet whether they had just frozen on the stems.

It's just on freezing point at the moment.

We had a peculiar phenomena last night. From 11.30 p.m. until 12.30 a.m. the sky was glowing orange in all directions.

To the SW, about 6 miles as the crow flies, is a town and I could understand if there was low lying cloud reflecting the orange street lighting but we had clear skies above us and could see the stars - although they may have had cloud over the town.

To the N, 7 miles, is the airport. They don't have orange lighting as all their lights are white light

To the E. there is no lighting for 14 miles but the sky still glowed but not as much as the other directions.

We don't have any windows facing W. :noidea:

Maybe @ARMANDII might have an idea about it. :)

Take care walking on footpaths where rain has fallen on sheets of compressed snow as they are treacherous. We took a detour using footpaths through the fields to get to the other end of the village this morning.

We've now got rain and lots of it. The good news is that the hose will have defrosted so we can fill the horse's trough as I and daughter were getting decidedly cheesed off getting water from the burn these last few days. The bad is that it's still like a skating rink on the driveway so will need to be really careful. Saw an amazing Geminid Meteror Shower last night. The best shower I have ever seen, I do hope @ARMANDII saw it as while I enjoyed seeing it I'm sure he would have appreciated it more.

Maybe the strange glow was something to do with ''Oumuamua'' the interstellar asteroid that Dr Alan Penny was talking about on the news last night from St Andrews university....I wonder who is out there :th scifD36::th scifD36::th scifD36::th scifD36:

Thanks for the thought, silu, but while Monday night had clear skies, Tuesday night was cloud covered so I didn't get a chance to see the Geminids. But after the very late night/early morning on Monday night in a very cold Observatory taking images I don't think I was awake enough to see them anyway:heehee: The source that's causing the Geminids shower is an old visitor but unusual in that usually it's the tails of Comets that cause the showers when the Earth passes through the remnants of the tail but, in this case, it's caused by an asteroid 3200 Phaethon which warms up as it nears the Sun.

It's a mundane answer I'm afraid , Shiney and Tetters, as it was the "usual suspect"........a pressure weather front bringing the red dust from Africa just at the right time in the evening lighting. It does turn up quite frequently in varying degrees, sometimes we see in only in the marks left by rain but this time we were lucky enough to see it being carried by high moist winds.

Naah, the Asteroid "Oumuamua" only got as close as 21.000.000 miles to the Earth and is now on it's way travelling away from the Sun. It's an interesting visitor though and was a surprise to Scientists/Astronomers when it appeared, and was first thought to be a Comet but later they found it was an Asteroid.

A grey day with snow showers and although it settled it thawed quickly. However, the heavy snow we had last week is still thawing slowly and the local roads are now lethal with ice. 1C/34F.
