    Hi,

Relentless rain all day yesterday from getting up to going to bed; Blackie excelled himself. I feel saddened for all those suffering from flooding; to have deep dirty water invade your home must be horrendous.

Dozens sleep at shopping centre amid floods

Flooding all around us with many roads still closed; fortunately although we live on a steep valley side I installed our own flood defences years ago after water gained access under the bungalow due to runoff from our large rear garden. Working on my own with Bron supporting with mugs of tea and bickies it was a six week long heavy job; as soon as I lifted the flags and dug the trench Blackie filled the trench with water holding work up for a full week. This was in 2013 and no problems since.

    Kind regards, Colin.

The end of the new channel running into a 4" diameter soil pipe allowing water discharge to the side of the bungalow. The bottom of the channel is 4" thick concrete; I only intend to do this job once.

    Here's the pipe being installed.

    More work in progress (5).JPG

Major DIY; new channel and all new pipework.

    New Tufnol motor mount (1).JPG
We bought a new cement mixer for this job but when it arrived it had a broken motor mounting so I made a new mounting.

I can never do a straightforward job; there's got to be lots of frustration to divert me.

Who would guess the amount of work involved under the patio.

I modified the drains too; leaves and slugs no longer a problem; a very neat solution with a bit of thought.

Here's Ruby our neighbour's cat daily inspecting work in progress. Please note absence of Blackie; I really should frame this rare picture.

A job well done Colin. I don't know about Ruby ... but she looks like a chubby Blackie to me! Reminds me of my dearly departed Magic Sam aka Boo ...

Still none of the promised rain. The frost has gone and so has the sun and wind. We also had butterflies today. Two Red Admirals landed on my feeder scoop whilst I was doing the bird feed. Sarafi the cat came over to investigate and jumped when they flew off straight across his face. :heehee:

              Hi,

Thanks Victoria; :) what a gorgeous cat your late Magic Sam was; I bet you still think of him a great deal; Bron and I have had four cats and when each died it was tearful for us they being family. We have about a dozen cats visit us and we spend around £20 per week on cat food and bird nuts even though we no longer have a cat of our own; we're animal lovers and often prefer animals to people. :dbgrtmb:

WOW Jiffy; if butterflies and bumble bees wanted to visit us they would need a force field around them. :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Yes I too can't wait for the sleet and snow to arrive Logan; it will make a change from Blackie. It was fine here this morning but now it's the usual wet black hole; Blackie had the morning off but he's now back enjoying dancing on our roof. :wallbanging:

              Kind regards, Colin.

It rained during the night with a 29mm total rainfall and we'd already had 30mm the previous day. But this morning the skies were clear and blue, with an early morning temperature of 38f and then in the afternoon the temperature rose to 43f when cloud came in and by 5pm we had some light rain. Right now the temperature is 40f, the skies are clear again and the pressure reading is 993hpa. There's a widespread hard frost forecast for tomorrow morning so I've thrown a couple of large sized fleece over the newly arrived Hardy Perennials and Ferns just to give them some protection.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Light rain showers and gentle breeze temp 5 at 5am down to 0c
The sleet has disappeared for tomorrow, that probably means that we'll have snow :heehee:

Yes we've been having a lot of rain and it will make a change to have snow but not too much.

With minus temperatures overnight and this morning the clouds came in around 10am and we had our first snow - just a short shower though. From then on the day was sunny and crisp at 3C/37F.

                            Great work Colin.
Here in Eltham the day started with a heavy frost and flipping cold. Amanda & I were frozen waiting for the train to London. I had an echocardiogram at Guys. Strange to hear ones heart beating and the action of the valves. Reminded me a bit of kids jumping up and down in puddles. Good laugh with the staff on completion. Jokingly, mainly at my suggestion. I was expecting twins, one of each and a heinz variety. I like to have a joke.
Colin seeing the work you have been doing. This reminded me of my childhood. We lived in a house that had a basement. The basement front room had outside what we called the area. Rain water would lay for days. Dad with my childish help of course' dug out ahole and set a drain trap in. Then under the floor boards we layed salt glazed pipes right out to the back yard and into the gully that took away the kitchen/scullery waste water.
From our caravanning days, we had a friends from Huddersfield. I think the address was. The Mound. Sadly Alan's wife died and he soon followed. I now have a lady friend and family from Doncaster. Thankfully they are just outside the present flood area. Yorkshire seems to be a victim of flooding such a shame.

We had twenty minutes of rain yesterday but our hearts go out to the family of the lady who died in the flood. I was born near there.
