I hate to disappoint anyone but this British Columbia flooding business is not climate change at all - no matter how much media is trying to spin it. Manmade yes, but not a climate issue. Yes, there was a lot more rain than usual but...

      Please read this little blurb:
A 1922 photo of Sumas Lake, a body of water drained in the late 1920s to make way for much of modern Abbotsford. After heavy rains overwhelmed the city's usual flood defences, an evacuation order was issued Tuesday night over fears that Sumas Lake would begin a "catastrophic" reconstitution. The pumps need to work continuously, any failure to the pumps and the land would start to flood anyways. Was there any failure to the pumps?

I was reading some of the comments made the other day, this one really stuck out and showed the lack of knowledge "Unfortunately, climate change is going to force us to move infrastructure, and possibly entire towns, to safer areas not prone to these new frequent devastating flood events".

Well, the lake was there for a reason, mankind drained it. Maybe it should of never been drained in the first place.

Here's the rest of the short article.

A major Canadian city faces the very real prospect of reverting to its prior status as a lake
. Although the heavy rains that lashed B.C. earlier this week have largely ceased, in Abbotsford they’ve caused the overwhelming of a local pumping station that authorities warned Tuesday could prompt a “catastrophic” rush of water that would pose a “significant risk to life .” Much of Abbotsford sits in the footprint of a former lake that was drained in the 1920s and flooding has compromised the usual defences that keep the area drained. One of the more heartbreaking aspects of an evacuation order issued Tuesday night was the requirement for farmers to abandon their livestock ; a directive likely to result in death for tens of thousands of Fraser Valley cattle and horses.

I keep hearing statements made by people that dramatize weather events. "I've lived here umpty years and never seen anything like this and it's because of climate change".

The picture was from almost a century ago. It's a repeat. Luckily lots of years between. So why do they say those silly things! :rolleyespink:

When will governments and planners learn that natural areas of water should remain so. I'm thinking here also of the huge housing estates that are built on natural flood plains, therefore creating devastating floods because the water has nowhere else to go.

Where our house is, it used to be marsh land before the Romans came and drained it and dug out ditches to use it for farms and animals.
I think some of the ditches were filled in when these houses were built but it's not flat land at all. There's a small river here and they had to make changes to area around it so when the river broke it's banks the water wouldn't flood some of the houses.
In one area they had to divert part of the river when it floods by making a ditch from one part of the river to another part. It's called something but I can't remember what. There's 3 bridges over the river and they had to raise the paths that lead to it so the water would stay where it was. But it floods the rest of the path so people still won't be able to get to the industrial estate for work.
