already mentioned on another thread but.. It is 26f -3.5c and the ground has a thick layer of snow. Tonight the guessers are saying that 8f -13c will be happening.

Most of the forum members here are a good 5-9 degrees latitude or further NORTH of the equator from my coordinates (43.465 degrees north) . example: London, England is 51.5 degrees north.

See what happens when you don't have a gulf stream. :hate-shocked:

I think the gulf stream plays a part but so does the East west thing.
Bearing in mind Vancouver is 49.2 degrees north and Toronto is 43.5 degrees north .
I see its minus 7 in Toronto but plus 3 in Vancouver, and Vancouver is 3 hrs behind you.

If you are on the Eastern edge of a large land mass, bearing in mind the prevailing winds are Westerlies in the Northern hemisphere, you winds will be mostly coming off a cold winter land mass. If you are on the western side of the land mass your winds will be mostly off of a comparatively warmer ocean.

We normally get real snow when the wind blows from the N.E. or East.

The sun keeps breaking through the cloud and it is quite breezy now and 17c. We want/need rain!

Sorry @pete - I gotta disagree- the gulf stream is what saves you from having my weather.

What would happen to the U.K. and Europe if the Gulf Stream stopped?

                It would get extremely cold.

The entire UK is further north than the entire continental United States. Yep, even Cornwall is further north than Maine. But whereas Boston gets blanketed with snow every year, it is not uncommon for the majority of the UK to be snow-free most years.

Winter temperatures in the UK would plunge to Canadian levels.

@pete - the Rockies stop the warm air from blowing onto the prairies. Every once in awhile a chinook might blow down into Alberta to warm it in the winter but they are not a constant like the effects from the warm ocean streams

We’ve luckily had a few sunny, mild days here in East Yorkshire. Feels like spring is actually here now. Popped to the local shop earlier and the large grassed area had a carpet of crocus flowers!
Like a vivid sea of purple, lovely!

I agree it would get colder, but I doubt it would get as cold as the Eastern side of the American continent.
Just look at Anchorage Alaska 61 degrees and its winter temperatures look similar to yours.

We dont have a mountain range between us and the Atlantic.

True, when (sorry, IF :th scifD36:) the Gulf stream stops or turns, GB will be a cold, windy island.

In addition, large masses of open water are a great thermal deposit when the air gets below freezing. Take an oceanful of above freezing stuff next to it and the air masses mix nicely. If there is, instead, a large mass of land, the temperatures can drop or rise and stay very stable for a long time.

In Finland, if we get the weather (or winds) from west, things change rapidly but the climate is more or less costal. If the opposite happens and we get whatever is going on above Siberia, it can mean weeks of very hard (-20 even in south) winter, or very hot (30+ ) summer.

I'm banking on the Gulf Stream for keeping us toasty for at least a decade or so. It is slowing down, so things will change sooner or later.
