@pete thank you for the advice. I do find it really stuffy with windows shut during the day and the front bedroom really heats up if the windows are shut. I think shutters may be a bit depressing inside! Hubby goes round shutting windows at 6pm and I follow behind reopening them! He loves the heat.

One neighbour has had reflective glass put in his windows, but I would rather have the sun warming us in winter.

The secret is to drink lots of water.

If the outside temperature is higher than the inside temperature opening windows just let's the heat in.
When I worked I always came home to a comparatively cool home during hot weather simply because the house was closed up all day. ;)

We don't have the windows open with hot weather, even at night and we always close the curtains, also got fans which helps.

Some white clouds early but totally clear now and I have 28c in the shade on a north facing wall.
Weather app says it 24c but its more than that, I think apps just quote a forecast rather than actual. I'm often lower than the app in winter.

It's warm today but very overcast which is a shame as the forecast was very sunny. We may get sun later this evening if we're lucky like last night. It's very humid without much wind.

@pete and @Logan I did keep the windows and back door shut when it once got up to 39C! The old FF was a SN rating and only operated up to 32C, but our new one is SN & T and can withstand temps up to 43C. I could not sleep with the windows shut, unless I slept downstairs.

I told you the eat was coming! It is only 82f and it will be cooler tomorrow according to the guessers.

It is not just hot air coming in that you need to worry about. Even with twin pane windows the sun will skyrocket the thermometer. Close your drapes, shades, whatever you have. A blackout drape has a minimum R4 rate of insulating value.

If it cools down a lot in the evening and is colder outside, put a fan blowing out the window to help create a cross breeze to pull in the cooler air through another window.

That said, the heat spell was so prolonged, I had to put on the central air to get some sleep!

Yesterday it reached 28C with almost no breeze and quite muggy.

At 3 a.m. this morning it was 16C out there and has risen to 17C now. Our place is south facing and our lounge has the south wall virtually all glass - patio doors and glass side panels. We thought it was an excellent idea when we had it done and for a lot of the year it is.

In the winter, although it is double glazed, it makes the room quite cold at night so we close the heavy curtains to help keep the cold out. In the hot weather even if the outside temperature is only 22C it can get to 30C inside if it is sunny. So we had to install a retractable canopy and it works pretty well with shading the glass whilst allowing the light in. :blue thumb:

We rarely open windows for very long as we need to keep our flying friends out. Apart from the usual flying bugs we were always having to catch bees and wasps that came in to visit. Our garden has a continuous buzz of bees - with some of them active even in very early Spring. We have a garden full of plants that attract all the pollinating insects. :)

Their current favourites are the hundreds of Jerusalem sage (mainly bees with them) but the Verbascum chaixii and the Veronicastrum are just coming into flower. Bees love both but hoverflies go mad over the Verbascum and the butterflies prefer the Veronicastrum.
