Well, I knew about some settlers coming from nowadays area of southern Jutland (Denmark) and northern Schleswig-Hollstein (Germany) who settled in south-eastern England.
They were the Jutes (from southern Jutland), the Angel (from northern Schleswig-Hollstein) and the Sachsen (from the North-Sea coast north of the mouth of the river Elbe).
Last summer I visited those lands. I was in Hamburg and I travel by train through Schleswig-Hollstein to Westerland (the northermost part of Germany at the border with Denmark on the Nordsee).
To every british people who want to discover its origins and roots, I suggest such a journey.
In those lands he will discover, expecially in the architecture style of Houses and Dwelling, where its ancestors come from.
However, I didn't know the reason why they left their homeland to go to Britain.
About climate, I read that in the middle ages, Britain was warmer than today so much that it was very widespread the vineyards.
But what I mean to argue, it is not the fact that throughout history some hot decays have occurred.
I argue that if anything, those climate changes were taking place gradually and in a long time.
Nowadays, I've got the feeling that all changes are taking place in an extremely quick time.
For example: today it is minus 10 and it is snowing hard; tomorrow is +30 and we are all T-shirt and shirt...
    That feels to me anomalous.
And the question is: is that due to human activities ?

Mr Noah reckons everyone laughed at him when he said the voices in his head had told him to build a huge boat even though he lived inland. And look how sudden the weather changed there. All those people that laughed at him were laughing on the other side of their faces as they watched their homes being washed away. That was pretty sudden.

Its quite normal for sudden drastic changes in weather, depending on where you are at the time. It only takes a slight change in the direction of the wind and it can change from, say, hot dry air coming off the lowlands to the south, or freeze cold air coming off the mountains.

Here in Britain, we are far enough north that it should be bitterly cold in the winter, but a combination of prevailing winds and sea currents means that generally its not too bad, but it only takes a slight change in the weather fronts to bring freezing air in from the arctic and then we go from mild temperatures to almost arctic conditions within hours. Another slight shift switches the wind back to its usual westerly, and once again we've got mild weather.

A grey slightly chilly day for the most part today; although it was warm for the hour or so the sun poked through the clouds this afternoon.

All the clouds cleared just before dusk, chance of a light frost tonight..

An interesting phenomenon this morning :rolleyespink:.

Yesterday we decided to tidy up one of our nursery/storage areas after the winter. So all the pots and trays get put on the lawn and Mrs Shiney starts sorting them out and moving them to sales or storage areas. Tgis morning, there are still dozens of pots still to be done and they range from 3" pots in trays to pots up to 18" high. We had a frost last night and all the grass is covered in it - except to the west side of all the pots and trays. I can understand the larger pots providing frost shelter to some extent but even the small trays have unfrosted areas to the west of them as well. All the frost free spots seem to be almost exactly the size of the height of each pot.

Re climate change - did anyone watch the TV programme last week about the study of the effect of sun activity on our climate. We seem to be in for an interesting time!

Well, we have a light frost this morning; 0 degrees, nothing too drastic, looks like we're in for a nice day before the weather goes down the pan this week...

Yes - had to rewatch it on BBC i player again the next day to try and absorb more info. I like the bandings on the ice core - found it somehow reassuring: it seems to have happened before and, God willing, will happen again and emerge the other side

Overnight stayed above 5C. It also rained quite a bit.
    Now raining again, although 14C.
BBC suggest we are getting Snow within the next couple of days, although I'm doubtful of this.
Having said that Netweather say 50% chance of Snow and -4C by tomorrow evening - maybe I need to cross my fingers!

Yesterday was a far better day than forecast; after the frosty start it was sunny all day and the temperature topped a very pleasant 18 degrees with just a light breeze. Today is overcast and much cooler, the temperature at the moment struggling to 12 degrees, we've also had a few spots of rain but not enough to even wet the ground..

No frost here as yet, I'll see what tomorrow brings. Cloudy today with the threat of rain but it didn't materialise. 9C now at 9.30pm.

I'm preparing to bring all my seedlings in from the greenhouse.

No sign of a frost here last night; its currently 7 degrees and cloudy, BUT I'm hoping my local weather forecasters have got it wrong for tomorrow night ~ -4 to -6!!!:hate-shocked:, I'll be out in the garden today protecting things just in case, I'm taking no chances. I've got spuds through which one layer of fleece on them at the mo but I'll be giving them a bit more protection I thinks..:WINK1:
