oops, I meant to "Reply", not do a "quote in conversation".
      Never mind

My 2 kids want a fish each, so I guess I will only get 2 then.
I can always put some sort of insulation around the barrel over winter to keep the worst of the cold away.

Looking good, Sirius! You will find that the plants will all disappear below the water overwinter, but don't panic, they should come back again next spring, as the water warms up again....

I thought you might like to see how quickly a barrel can mature! I only bought this barrel this April, and then planted it up in early May... (please excuse the washing in the background)

Thank you honeybunny! Yes, there are three goldfish in the barrel. I would say small, but they have grown really fast this year. We do have lots of insects here (I needed them for mozzie control), and it is a big barrel... I will try to keep the pump working through the winter, which will keep the water fractionally warmer, and if it stops /freezes, I will regularly melt a hole in the surface with a half-full pan of boiling water. Our slightly smaller barrel never froze solid, although we did sometimes have 3-4 inches of ice on the top, so the fish should be fine.

oh i remember reading somewhere that a ball left to bob about on the surface of ponds over winter can help stop the ice from forming...might be of some use to you :)

i'd love to have a goldfish pond/barrel but we had so many mozzies this year i'd be afraid of it attracting even more...or would a goldfish pond actually help to keep all the mozzies in the garden in check?

The bobbing ball works if the temperature is not too low, but I found it just would freeze in place on our coldest nights, when temps even next to the house will drop to about -18 or -20....

Agitated water freezes at below freezing (!!), which is why waterfalls etc are the last bit of a stream or river to freeze. I've tried to use this to my advantage, but have ended up with some quite impressive ice sculpture....
