Why so much interest in tomatoe, and peppers growing?

Home grown Tomatoes & cheese in a sandwich, sorry Mike you can't beat the taste.

 

Oh. yes you can! (It must be panto season, I've just heard President Tweety Pie on the news)

Crostini, goat or sheeps milk cheese, topped with cotognata made from quince taken out of ones own garden....Its Italian in origin, and whereas the British eat to live, Italians live to eat...

 

That is rather like a couvert here ... goat's cheese with pumpkin jam on home made bread, yum.

 

For my part, it’s the satisfaction of putting food I’ve grown on the table, along with the whole process of sowing and nurturing. Based purely on cost, the numbers don’t really stack up, as my three raised beds cost me the best part of £350, I could buy a lot of veg with that. I could of course have just had a traditional veg bed, but I find raised beds easier to manage. In the end, it gives me pleasure

 

I used to grow tomatoes but found that they were too much trouble when my neighbour who has a small holding sells his excess veg. Far fresher and cheaper than the supermarket.
I just grow fruit now and although I've had several failures the successes are worth the effort. I harvested my apricots today

 

I don't grow tomatoes or pepers, I only buy peas and baby carrots as I can't grow them here

 

@Mike Allen ...To me Toms are one of the easiest crops to grow ,feed and water as you would any plant be it fruit, veg or flowers.. you'll never beat the taste of home grown toms...yes things can go wrong but nothing ventured nothing gained...i luv 'em.

 

I've never seen any of the peppers I grow in a grocery or even specialty shops. And I dislike fresh uncooked tomatoes. The closest I get to fresh is when I make bruschetta and at least that is partly baked. My family and friends love them fresh so I grow some for them. They say they taste better than the store bought.

 

I do it because I like growing things, if I didn't I wouldn't bother.
I do sometimes wonder about the tomato thing though, I used to grow loads and end up giving most away, same with cues, so now I just have enough for what I want.
I do think out door grown tomatoes in proper dirt are better than green house ones in bags, if you grow them you might as well buy them and save your self the trouble.
I can actually tell the difference between home grown sweet peppers and shop bought,but not sure they are worth the hassle.
I only grow pink fir apple potatoes because I like them and rarely see them for sale.
Other than that a spud is a spud.

 

Noooo don't bring roses into it, that's all I grow! All my gardening will be declared pointless at this rate

 

Growing roses is never pointless! Thats the reason I currently have 74 bushes in the garden!

 

Me too! Raw tomato is one of the few foods I can't stand - the taste and the texture combined. Tomato soup, brilliant, tomato-based sauces, great, cooked chunks, ok, but raw tomato Mr Bassoon thinks it very strange, I'm glad I'm not alone in that!

 

@2nd_bassoon to me, the stuff around the seeds is like runny egg whites or snot. Who wants to eat snot!

You are the only other person I have heard who hates them raw. I love spaghetti sauce, all sorts of tomato dishes if cooked. Just not raw.

 

Raw, freshly picked tomatoes served with a touch of freshly picked Basil (home grown) and olive oil..... what's not to like?

Like the the cheese and tomato sandwich more (toasted in homemade bread)
