    The hellebores in Hatfield Forest are blooming well now. There are about 60 in this colony. Wonderful!

    Coltsfoot is just coming in to flower now. Named from its leaves which look like colts' hoof prints, they emerge much later than the flowers.
    The leaves were dried and smoked and used as a very effective cough remedy.

    I love the coltsfoot flower picture..your forest must be a magical place ..they still use the coltsfoot in herbal ciggarettes available at the health shop..

    Used to love coltsfoot rock as a lad don't know how much was actually in it

    Superb photos as usual HB - I especially like the helebores - dont know if mine are out yet cos I cant get up the garden to see :mad: Praps Mr M will take me up in the wheelbarrow :D

    Great thread! And lovely pix, too - must dust off my old gear! It's been boxed since we started renovating.... four years!!!
    One minor bit of pedantry though..."milfoil", I think you'll find, refers to the ferny leaves rather than the flowers. The latin is "mille folium" which comes to us through Old French (probably Norman) and means "a thousand leaves". The modern French is "mille feuilles" - like those scrummy pastries. (I spent some of the first two years of my languages degree charting the devopment of latin into all sorts of things... stuff you can always use, eh???) Bet that's sent everybody to sleep!!!!
