I'm not having much luck at identifying anything! [IMG] I am now thinking the above pinky purple flower is perhaps a Gladiolus italicus.

    Any ideas Hyla?

I believe this may be Rue graveolens ...

And I haven't a clue on these two yet so I've called them blue and pink ...

This is just a better shot of the mini Irises, only a few inches tall ...

Reckon you're right about the wild gladdies, possum! (Yes... thank you Dame Edna!) Looks like Gladiolus illyricus, which we find here - but it could be a different sp. since you're t'other side of the Pyrenees...

The "blue & pink" looks suspiciously like yer good ole borage - Borago officinalis! If so - lucky you - the flowers look and eat really well in a salad! But I'm sure you already know that.... [IMG]

Love those irises. Aren't they gorgeous?

Hi, Hy! (notice I left out the de in the middle!).

Thanks for looking. I have a few bulbs of the possible Gladiolus. I did not pick them, my friend did and some were forced upon me! Some are also winging their way to England as we speak!

I wondered about the Borage. The blue was very small and the pink almost as tall as me ... ah, Ha, that's about 5'3", and had soft fuzzy leaves.

This is my first "encounter" with them so no I have not enjoyed them in salad.

I have these lovely little Irises, like a said, a couple of inches tall, on my lane, but they have finished I think and these were near my friend's house in the hills. They are more than beautiful.

Cistus albidus, the grey-leaved Cistus, which I have only found in my local area ...

Cicstus salvifolius, the sage-leaved Cistus ...

Nigella damascena, Love in a Mist ...

    Lavendula stoechas, French Lavender ...

    Anagallis foemina ...

More lovely pics - all those colours, beautiful!

Yes, the one plant is Borage, we have it in the garden, comes back every year by itself. It got rather out of hand so Hubby uprooted most of it, but still have one patch of it.

The wild flowers are really flowering well now by the looks of things, and I've noted the gladiolus, hope my bulbs survive

Mine, too, pete. I tried to uproot this beauty today ... with a nailfile but no luck (no tools in our car, )

Took the flower with t'other half's permission (he's very don't take anything with you) and it's beautiful now in a vase on my counter. The flower is two-toned, absolutely stunning, which is why t'other half said I could have it!

Isn't it amazing how such grow on the roadside?

They grow where the conditions suit them best, and the seed that falls in the wrong place just dies.
    Its nature. [IMG]

    Hi, LoL!

Apologies - just caught up with this thread! I think you're unlikely to have Gladiolus italicus unless you're near Lisbon or right in the south of Portugal. As far as I can see from the record, G. italicus has been found in two locations near Lisbon and one in the south - so if you're further north, it would be a first, I think. Quite possible with climate change, I suppose.

'Fraid I can't tell you what the differences are between the two spp. - my guides don't list G. italicus as a northern European species, and my taxonomic key only covers Britain. Not much help, am I? Sorry!!!

Hi Hyla and Happy Easter Monday to you.

I am in Algarve so can't get much further south without being in the Atlantic!

I agree with you that what I have found is illyricus.

Here's what my new book says ....

Gladiolus illyricus, Wild gladiolus (height to 70cm). Slender perrenial with grey-green grass-like leaves that are easily overlooked when not i flower. Flowers are pinkish-purple and 30-40cm across; borne in spikes of 3-8, apprearing April-July. Favours grassy places, often in open woodland or on heaths. Widespread across the Mediterranean.

Gladiolus italicus, Field gladiolus (height to 1m). Robust but slender perennial with green, broadly grass-like leaves. Flowers reddish-purple and 40-50cm across; borne in spikes of 6-15, March-June. Favours cultivated ground and arable fields. Widespread across the Mediterranean. the commonest gladiolus in the region sometimes colouring whole fields.

It is such a beautiful flower I hope my bulbs take.

This was up in the hills when we went on Sunday. I think it is Teline linifolia ...

And I found this Allium, wild garlic, in my rockery this morning ...

And these two out on the lane ...

Malva sylvestri, the common Mallow ...

... and I believe an Achillea, Yarrow ...

My two books are about as useful as I am in identification ... perhaps Portugal has a lot of unidentified species of wildflowers.

Aloes and Carpobrotus edulis (Hottentot Fig) ...

Anagallis arvensis (Scarlet Pimpernel) and Anagallis foemina ...

Lupinus ? (Wild Lupin) ... my books only list a blue/purple variety ...

Zantedeschia aethiopica (Arum or Calla Lily) ...
