I spent a while looking at the Native Wild Flowers of the UK page & found it very straight forward & interesting as well as instructive, @burnie

When I was walking back home with our granddaughter after picking her up from school we found a lovely patch of brilliant Buttercups! :)

I took our U3a Nature group out for orchids as some had never seen any.
All three were in profusion along the cliffs including a white Early Purple .

Early Spiders were still hanging on.

That's nice, I've never seen a white one around here.

I'm not terribly sure but I think these are Speedwell flowers. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Yes @Balc it's Creeping Speedwell, Veronica repens. It was a dreadful weed in a previous garden for me, but quite pretty as well.

A trip to Martin Down on the Wiltshire/Dorset border to see these Burnt Tip orchids, only 7 plants but better looking than last year.

Much rarer, Bird's Nest Orchid, a parasitic one and not at all colourful, just brown!

Our orchids are struggling this year and I don't know how many have survived the winter. I've spotted only one bee orchid just about an inch high and one pyramidal orchid about the same. I haven't cut any of the grass or other plants in our wild area so now can't see whether more are growing. They're usually about 4" high by now.

@shiney - it has been a late spring. The bee orchids at the Botanic Garden seem to have disappeared. My Dactylorrhiza are flowering but they are in a shady damp spot.
I love those burnt tip @strongylodon - were you on one of the Hardy Orchid Society field trips?

@CarolineL, no I visited on my own, I was told where to find them, just four flowers, in strict confidence.
The orchids at Badbury Rings, near Wimborne are slow this year. Only a few Greater Butterfly showing, some Common Spotted and plenty of Common Twayblade in various sizes but they are harder to see as the grasses are more lush compared to last year (drought).

I have never seen an Orchid growing in the wild here in the UK but I did see one once when we lived in Spain.

                            These are amazing pictures!
