Hello Cookie Monster! I don't think I've welcomed you to GC yet ... so bem-vindo! [IMG]

These are really lovely photographs and I have enjoyed looking at them. Several of the shots reminded me very much of Faial Island in the Azores. Thank you for sharing these with us.

I think you should add "photography" to your list of hobbies and perhaps join us in our monthly comps ... says she tongue in cheek with such competition.

PS We knew someone from Ivybridge (small world) who we actually met here in Portugal in 1983 on a Small World holiday!

    Enjoy the forum.

    Thanks Lady of L!

Glad you enjoyed the pics. I love experimenting with the digital camera and then playing around with them on photoshop.

You must have some beautiful parts of Portugal with lovely sunsets I imagine.

Borrower - glad you liked too [IMG]

Here is an old church near Castletown - it is the church my Great Auntie was buried in last Novemeber so it has a special place in my heart. I photo'd it normally then converted it to black and white on the computer and then sepia' ized it.

It is remarkable how technology has helped me when I used to take pics cutting the heads off people!

[IMG] Great shots CM, brings back memories.. We used to go over most years for the Manx Grand Prix in Sept.. Not done it now for a fair few years.. We used to stay near Jurby.. [IMG] Nice & remote, but just loved that beach.. My daughter & I swam with seals many a time, but the water was b****y freezing as it was the Irish sea..!! Great time had there over the years.. Thanks for sharing with us.. [IMG]

    Thanks Nutty and Marley [IMG]

I shall certainly hunt out LOLs Portugal pics - but be patient, I've years of catching up to do on the forum!!!

Marley - I have been on the Island several times during Grand Prix week. It is very overshadowed by the TT but really is just as good fun - although, when I was a vet out there for a short time, the road closures for the racing made getting to certain farms in a hurry, a nightmare!

Ahhhh Jurby - my mums favourite place on the Island - namely for Jurby Junk! For those not in the know, this was an old aeroplane hanger type affair that was every carbooters dream! We have many little nik naks from there which we hope will turn into unexpected treasure!

I love the church at Jurby. It is located in such an isolated and lonely place - right on the coast by the sea. It always makes me sad to see the graves of airmen who were killed there during WW2 on training exercises. A sad place, but incredibly beautiful and spiritual for that too.

Swimming with seals - how fab. But I couldn't agree more about the sea temp - never gets warm, even when there has been a decent summer. Rain and fog are sadly the cross you have to bear to have such a hilly Island in the middle of the Irish Sea! They do great wet suits now - and by golly you need them!

I have just realized, being on a gardening forum and haven't mentioned manx wild flora yet. All I know about are the lovely sea pinks you get on the coastal headlands so here is a link to a very knowledgeable site on the subject!

Please tell me when I get too evangelical about the IOM and I'll zip up! :D

[IMG] Feel free CM, it is great to hear & see photos of the island.

I have whiled away many an hr in Jurby Junk.. Did manage to control myself & have a couple of real little gems from there.. It just looked a nice little box that said "Pins" on top.. When I got it home & cleaned it up it turned out to be Ebony.. The writing is Silver & in longhand & the compartments inside are all edged with silver... Paid £2 turns out worth around £150 now.... Its age & the silver.. So not bad I think..

We have been for the TT a few times back in the late 60s & 70s.. Used to watch an old racing aquaintance of ours, Stanly Woods. But the Manx GP has always been my favourite as we were into the older British Bikes.. As you say though once the roads were closed you were well & truly stumped..

It is such a beautiful Island. You have bits of Scotland here & there, or round another corner you might think you were in Cornwall. I think you can find a little bit of the whole of the British Isles there somewhere ;) [IMG]
The wetlands & heathlands have so much to offer in the way of birds & insects, never mind the coast..

I always felt that when you travelled on the steam railway & it would stop at a halt that it was almost like going back in time..! :D

The only time we ever swam was when there were seals about as they were fascinated by us & us them. They would swim up & down with you & gradually come closer. We reckoned the closest they came was about 10', that seems really close when you are there. Their eyes are so sorrowful looking, but they are very playful. Beautiful animals.

[IMG] Ah, writing this brings back such memories. We will have to come back one day .. [IMG] Pal you & Mrs Pal would really enjoy it there. It is what I call "Idyllic".. We were walking around the harbour one evening in Port St Mary. And who should be walking towards us? Our garage man from the next village... :D Great Island..
