Will grass grow in this bit or is it not worth bothering?

Which has led me to another idea. A raised bed in that area instead of pots. :)

oooh very good idea, but i'm in rented.

If I knew i'd be there long term it would be perfect but like most renters you sign for 12 months and can't guarantee if you're going to be there longer.

If you are worried about wasting hard earned cash on somebody elses garden Charlie, you could find yourself some old pallets (those used for deliveries) and make the raised beds from those, give them a coat of stain to brighten them up, then add some trailing plants around the edges to soften the effect. It won't matter if you have to leave them behind and any plants can be temporarily potted up if you need to move again and want to take them with you. :)

Thanks sheal but its also that I'd have to take it all down etc when we moved, we have to leave everything as it was what we moved in.

Without a car things like that are a pain.

I'm currently trying to work out the logisitics of going to Homebase, wilkos etc buying the tools that i need (fork, rake, mower, bird table) and how to get them home, might have to offer a bottle of wine to a friend and see if they'll give me a lift. :)

If you nail the pallets together at the corners it wouldn't take long to destroy them! :)

Places like Homebase will deliver for you, costs between £5 and £10 I think and you could order online. Now you're thinking this woman's got an answer for everything! :heehee:
