I would doubt that you could disable it. They might tell you that its been disabled, but there is no point in having a back door if it can be disabled. Apparently Microsoft has allowed others to use this backdoor, and Lenovo (the Chinese manufacturer of my m/c) has been accused of using it for some very invasive programs. http://www.geek.com/apps/lenovo-caught-shipping-adware-on-new-computers-1616148/

Apparently they have removed the Superfish program referenced above after many complaints, but have recently installed a newer and worse one. Personally I don't think they would do anything underhand. I would totally trust the Chinese in the same way that I totally trust Microsoft. :ouch1:

      Hi @wiseowl :blue thumb: :)

I realise what apps do and are for but can't see a use for them as far as I'm concerned :noidea:

I rarely have a use for a mobile phone, don't text (can, but don't), am not interested in surfing the web except when on my PC, and have never (yet) needed any enhancements to my communication facilities. :heehee: Or enhancements of any type ;) :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

A computer is just a tool for me and the web is a communication and research device upon which I do just what I need it and when I need to.

When I was on holiday recently everyone seemed to have smartphones with them (at least they're less intrusive than the iPads that everyone seemed to hold up, last year, to take photos. In the evenings, when we were chatting, they used them to check 'facts' through the internet - even basic info! I think they're all losing the ability to think for themselves!

Friends with Windows 10 said that there did not seem to be any facility to Preview a photograph as there is on Windows 7. Can someone check it for me please?

Would someone tell me how I uninstall Apps.
My lap top is loaded with them and so in my phone, my phone in particular always wants to update apps that I have never used or are even likely to.

As for using the internet on a phone, its a joke, the screen is too small, the buttons are too small, and you cant hold the bloody thing, because you touch the screen and it does things you dont want it to????
I rarely get a strong enough signal to use the internet anyway, often not even a good enough one to actually make a call without it breaking up.

My personal thoughts on technology is, its fine if it works, but mostly it dont.
Grumpy old man, not me:biggrin:, just fed up with being sold rubbish, that hasn't been perfected yet.

Thanks Woo, finally managed to uninstall Norton, I'm now getting messages saying windows defender needs updating.
I'm guessing Norton had been hiding this and stopping it updating, which is why I didn't know it existed.
Just the kind of jiggery pokery from these kind of people that makes me disrepair at what kind of scams these so called internet security companies are up to.

                  Pal

I use Irfanview, which is free and I think is excellent. It allows you to view individual photos and change the size, colours and much more. It also allows you to view all the photos in a folder as in a slide show by clicking left or right mouse button. It also has a built in file explorer so that you can skim through many directories if you are looking for a specific photo.

It works in Windows XP, with a newer version for W8 and W10.

Incidentally I always store my photos in ordinary folders so that I can use Irfanview. I don't want to have photos hidden away in a special storage unit used by the camera manufacturer.

Edit. If you find a photo on a site that prevents you from copying it, you can do a PrtScr - which copies a screenshot on to the clipboard. Then open Irfanview and paste the picture. You can then highlight the area wanted and crop (ie remove) the rest of the picture. No picture on the internet is safe from me. :snork:

If one goes to a folder containing Pictures (Windows 7) and Click on a picture you get various options. One of them is Preview. This brings up the image at full size and allows you to move on to the next image or to start a Slideshow or various other things. Our friend did not seem to be able to find this in Windows 10.

Pal - I suspect that it is all there in Windows 10. A picture is a .jpg file. It all depends on what program the computer has been told to open when a .jpg file is clicked.

You can set this in Control Panel / Default Programs. You can either set a default picture viewer of just chose a .jpg file and be offered a choice of programs installed that will open that type. Once set, if you double click a .jpg file it will automatically open that program and open the picture within that program. What it does after that will depend on the program that has been chosen. If the program has the slideshow type properties then you will get a slideshow. I have set my default picture viewer to Irfanview, because I like it so much.

I am not aware of being offered a preview option - would that be with a right click - though I don't see that in W10. I always double click on a picture and this takes me into the picture viewing program, which in my case is Irfanview.

File options are not, as far as I can see, by Default Programs in Control Panel, they are part of the Windows set up as it comes.
Looks like I will have to find a Windows 10 machine and have a look for myself.
On 7 I use Preview in the Folder options to look at images in the Pictures folder, saves having to load up any other programs.

                      Hi Pal

Yes, I see what you are getting at. I have just had a look at Windows 8 and if you do a right click on a photo file, you get a menu that includes the word preview. When you click Preview, it loads Windows Photo Viewer and shows the full size picture. Windows Photo Viewer has the slide show facility built in. Preview is not a command I have ever used, as I find it quicker to double click the photo file itself.

In Windows 10 the word Preview no longer appears in the menu. But if you click the top word Open it does exactly the same thing. It will load the default photo viewer. In fact you don't have to use the right click menu at all, double clicking any photo will automatically load your default photo viewer and show the picture. This works in all the operating systems. So I presume they removed it because it was redundant.

As I said, I prefer Irfanview to Windows Photo Viewer, as it has loads more facilities built in - so have set that as my default via the Control Panel. It loads just as quickly as the Windows Photo Viewer.
