      Hi All,

      W10 - Should I , or shouldn't I ??

This is a very long thread with quiet a few diversions, but thought it the best place to ask.

Am a happy W8.1 user, but lately have been seeing news features where they say W10 gets the latest security patches, but they are not now being passed down to w8 or w7, well at least not anytime soon, so makes me wonder if its time to upgrade to W10 ??

Just wondered what you W10 users think now you have run it for a while ?
Are the W10 Updates as problematical as some make out ?
What about privacy issues, any problems there ?

I did do the W10 free upgrade in 2015 but had problems with some programs, so restored to W8.1 , but did keep a system backup image of W10 , so I can go back to it , as I proved the other day.

      thanks

I got a new PC 1 year ago with W10 intalled . My old PC had XP on it . W10 runs fine , no problems. Upgrading an existing PC to W10 may be another story though.

        Hi,

I originally Upgraded my W8.1 to W10 but that was possibly part of the reason for my problems.
Upgrading may make it simple from the users point of view, but from a Windows system it means all the bulk and problems of your previous system have to be moved into w10 system.

Once you have upgraded and therefor been registered with Microsoft as a W10 user, its probably best to download W10 Installation Media and do a clean install and then reload your software.
( you need to save all your data and do a system backup etc etc first , a bit of a job, but worth it)

What version of windows are you on ?

Did you try W10 Free like I did or are you going to have to buy it ?

Seems you can be naughty and still get it free if you tell pork pies ...

@ricky101 Thanks for your reply -
 I didn't do the recommended upgrade as im a stickler for what im familiar with and I don't do change- I think its easier to change to the whole PC than fiddledfaff about, thats what I normally do  Im still on windows7 and when i renewed my PC i had it altered by the PC chap to 7 as i could navigate it easier. But i think these new updates have finally caught up with me and im gonna have to accept it ;)
:thumbsup:Thanks for the link I'll go and have a read -porky pies not me -so it'll probably mean im changing my PC :pcthwack:

          Hi,

Well think you can upgrade or clean install your existing PC if you purchase W10 software.

However that costs around £100 and you still have to install it yourself.

Buying a new pc with W10 installed is a simpler way, but costly .

The first thing you need to check is how up to date is your PC ( desktop or laptop ?) and would it be good for W10 ?
Do you have details of your PC, make/model number, CPU type , memory size etc ?
( press the Windows Key and the Pause Key together to bring up that info.)

To my recollection my upgrade to Windows 10 was free.

@ricky101 with that info in mind i think i will a call to the Man who can (MR.PC) and see what the next best solution is- The most frustrating thing that i have found since the change date and it most likely is totally unrelated, but it's my Microsoft word program, I use that daily and of late its really giving me gyp- I have looked on CNET for a free download but no avail as yet- So I'll get in touch with the chap who sorted things out last time, as im most defo not puter savvy :heehee:
I'd rather be in the garden :gardening:
But thanks for your help i think you've given me just the push i needed :tomato:

Beat me to it - Open Office is great @BeeHappy, completely backwards compatible with MS stuff and dead easy to use. If you want other people to be able to open your stuff with MS Office, just remember to Save As... and choose the relevant type of file (.doc, .docx etc) as Open Office defaults to its own (.odt)

:thankyou:@Fat Controller more info thats much appreciated - I have bookmarked the link and will be perusing and absorbing all tomorrow, whats particularly reassuring is the advantage of getting familiar with the new program before letting the old program go. Will give a future update. In the words of Arnie, I'll be back :dbgrtmb:

I was with Windows XP for years then switched to Windows 7 when XP support ended. I read reviews of Windows 8 and didn't like what I read so I skipped to Windows 10 when it was available as a freebie. After a bit of messing around to get it to look and behave as I wanted we've got on very well.
