XP Support, updates and the like end in April this year, I'd recommend that you upgrade to Windows 7, though check that your computer can upgrade to W7 before spending your hard earned dosh.

The most annoying thing is that an upgrade to W7 is DEARER than W8, check out ebay for cheaper alternatives. Expect a price in the range £40-£50).

Everyone wants to wring money out of you these days, it still works OK.

At the moment, are you saying it wont after April?

No, but it will become extremely vulnerable to hackers etc. At the end of last year, there were rumours floating around that the hackers were in fact storing up their attack programs to release after the End of Support Date which is April 8th. If this is true and your machine is attacked, there will be no support or fixes available from MSoft.

I've got Windows 7 at the moment and I like it as it's very stable and easy to use. But I will be wanting to renew my Desktop in a year or two and, to be honest, after seeing all the negative reports and complaints from users of Windows 8 I'm not too happy about it.:dunno::doh::hate-shocked:

Windows 7 end of support is currently expected to be January 2020 by which time I for one certainly hope that there will be a replacement to Windows 8 and more user friendly and not purely for tablets and touchscreens.

I'm not happy with the touchscreens to be honest...give me a mouse any day, but then I don't like Tablets or Laptops and prefer my Desktop. I think there are probably more lost or stolen laptops and Tablets out there than there are owned ones, but that's another line of thought.!!:snork: Microsoft do seem to have a trend to produce OS's that are very controversial and unfriendly to the user although XP and 7 have proved reasonably popular and stable against their earlier systems. At the moment they seem to be losing their way against other companies in their haste to compete and are irritating users with gimmicks that annoy rather than please.

I've just bought a new laptop, so if you get some posts that are crazier than normal, its not me its the windows 8 that is causing the problem.

I still prefer the desktop opening page, but I keep getting this start page with loads of coloured blocks, containing stuff I've never heard of>?
Then I view pics and there doesn't appear to be anyway back to the original thumbnail page, the whole screen around the pic is black?

I plugged in my external harddrive ,with my music on it, lastnight and it kept saying I needed a licence or some such.
Anyway, I gave up eventually, now my harddrive wont work at all, on either machine.

Its all a bit of a nightmare and I'm tempted to go back to my old machine.

Thanks for that jools, I see that now, but how are we supposed to know this?
Why cant we just have a bar with all the options on, or, have and its been set up to hide it?

I paid PC world to set it up for me and they gave me 30mins tuiton, but I cant remember much of what they said, until you do it yourself it dont stick.

I think my external hard drive is kaput, dead as the proverbial door nail.

It was full of photos and music.
I think I can download the music from my old machine somehow, the pics are a problem, I have most backed up on DVDs, but I think some arn't.

I've been using firefox on my new laptop, but somehow I seemed to pick up some adware I guess.
I had two e bay ads pop up on every new page, and some kind of ad that put links onto certain words in the text, mostly about surveys.
So I uninstalled firefox, then reinstalled, touch wood everything is ok at the moment.

But scared to use E BAY again, or go compare.com

I was getting ads I wasn't interested in, regarding E bay.
I know what you mean, but these ads I was getting were covering about half the page area, so I had to cancel them each time in order to view the page.
