    You are right about South aspect, mine is on a south aspect and in fantastic rich loam. the above picture is of one on west aspect.

    Waco, I dont think you should be cutting it back this early, let it grow untill july then cut back the long shoots to a couple of buds or so.
    By July the main spring flush of growth has passed, by cutting too early you are stimulating it into another big flush of growth.
    The cut back shoots do regrow some in July August but not so rampantly. It also lets the sunshine in to the new growth to ripen it.
    You can then prune back the regrowth in winter if you want. This way the plant only increases in size very slowly.

    That sounds reasonable pete. I have this year cut back again in the hope that goodness wuld go back into plant and not into something I was going to remove in early august, but I see your point about it stimmulating more growth, so will re think my schedule.
