We have a willing helper! He wasn't even one year old when he brought back this stick

    pup stick.jpg

He's only a Cocker Spaniel, but now his longest stick is 9 foot, heaviest stick 5.6Kg, and brings home 3 sticks a day (and tries dragging small dead trees out of hedges. If we both take 30L rucksacks (and my cordless reciprocating saw with 225mm shark blade) on 2 of our dog walks, we can bring home a tonne of wood in a month. But after a while wood starts becoming scarce, and shortage of sticks for dogs becomes noticeable :th scifD36:

Also collect fir cones (more efficient to collect/carry when closed), dry them in summer then bin bag for use later on, raid every skip we can, collect up to 100 pallets p.a. and cut down any unwanted/storm damaged trees here abouts and remove free of charge. We've also been growing a variety of trees on our (rather large) plot for fuel.

It seemed rather chilly in our house earlier this afternoon, probably because of the heat being let outside whilst going in and out working in the garden, so we took Dog for a brisk walk, warmed ourselves up despite the chilling wind, ànd came back to a toasty 19+ deg C.

Your photo @Scrungee reminds me of my very much missed Kerry Blue Terrier who used to regularly carry huge sticks too. She was around the same size of your lovely dog. Large snag tho, mine used to approach me from behind with said large branch and welt me across the backs of my knees sometimes knocking me flying. There were many occasions when I informed her what she could do with her "toy" and it wasn't to put it on the fire!

Wood-burning stoves face crack down amid health warnings

Oh dear, is the the beginning of the end for those who collect free fuel?

Whatever next, only being allowed to buy approved expensive commerciaĺy produced approved fuels, having to store them in commercially produced, goverment approved local authority inspected privatised inspector approved fuel stores, etc., etc.?

So what did the human race heat their homes with for hundreds of years before central heating? It's just another con to make more money! :gaah:

I don't see how it would be possible to police this, even if it does become law. Is someone going to go and sit outside every home and monitor chimney emissions! Or place a detector in every home and monitor that! How would they stop people picking up free wood. We went to Snowdonia yesterday for a walk. We picked up 4 large fallen branches to take home. On this occasion I want them to add to my log pile, but I could have been collecting them for the stove. I did collect a carrier bag of cones anyway. There was no one to stop us. And even if there were they would have to prove the wood was burning.
