Rose Guinee is really pushing out the blooms for you woo. Can't wait to see your poppy burst open - haven't heard of that variety (yes, I could Google it, but then that would spoil the surprise for when you post a picture of it in bloom).

The arbour must be the best place to sit: the wildflowers, the water and watching the birds at the feeder - very tranquil :spinning:

Hi @"M" they must have got their wise ways from yours truly:heehee:

To day one of my Aquilegia collection
                      [IMG]

Think of aquilegias and what springs to mind? Cottage garden favourites happily self-seeding in beds, borders and gaps in the paving, blooming from May to July without a care in the world. Granny’s bonnets, columbines - call aquilegias what you will, but they are now under threat.

Carrie Thomas is the Plant Heritage National Collection holder of Aquilegia vulgaris cultivars and hybrids. It was in her small cottage garden in Wales, overflowing with aquilegias, that she first spotted something unusual and troubling. “Two years ago I noticed some of the leaves on the aquilegias were yellowing, and like a lot of gardeners I put this down to the weather. Mild and wet conditions can make aquilegias look unhappy. I turned a blind eye but that, in retrospect, was the worse thing I could have done. But at the time I didn’t know what was wrong”.

As symptoms worsened Carrie got in touch with the Royal Horticultural Society who diagnosed the disease to be a hitherto unknown downy mildew, specific to aquilegia.

“I cannot begin to describe what my heart felt like when I read this news,” says Carrie. “I was devastated”. It also turned out to be a particularly virulent mildew, wiping out a third of Carrie’s plants in 2014 with a depressing prognosis of decimation of the collection in the coming year.

“At this time of year I usually see the new growth, we all do, but I can only see labels where the plants should be. If only I had known earlier or quarantined the diseased plants I may have reduced the damage”.

I do not doubt where they acquired their wisdom woo :heehee:

Very pretty aquilegia, I love the colours :spinning:
I have only one and that is flowering this year, but a paler colour than yours woo. Bought it at Shineyland in 2013 but, for whatever reason, it didn't flower last year  This year, it is putting on quite a show. Camera needs batteries renewing so not photo from here.

I had read about the disease (think Carrie used to post on GC too) and I believe Shiney was helping her with her research at some point because his were almost wiped out one year as well.

Even more reason to cherish the ones we have :spinning:
