    Unlikely to have died and sunk to the bottom. If they had died (and the possible cause of that may be drops in temperature) they would have show signs of going black.

    My guess, for what its worth, is that foxes have got at them. Yup, I know that sounds strange, but I've seen a dog pull them out of the pond and run off with them, so it's not inconceivable that a fox could do the same (Penny is far too well behaved!).
