@Busy-Lizzie that's the irish and US pronunciation wih emphasis on the second syllable. Irritates me too.

I get cross when people use collective and single nouns with plural verb forms eg The government are.....

As for high voices, when Jean-Jaques Goldman comes on the radio when I'm driving, I change channel.

It probably stems from the years working in health care and then I am told a "new" social service worker is now assigned and when talking to her I get the high pitch voice and I know she is so young, has got not one clue about anything except what she learned in college, so the learning curve of dealing with a situation will be me also guiding her and the client I am working with, its just tiring. Also, my crazy SIL, not blood related, married to Hubby youngest brother, she has this grating high pitch voice, on top of that she will tell fibs/lies, or fabricate things, so frankly anything out of her mouth I ignore from now on. Thank goodness the live way in California. Thanks for the rant. Retired now.

As sports season is in full swing, there is ample opportunity to hear one of all time favourite annoying words/sayings:

      “done good”,

when referring to a person’s efforts. I expect culprits of this are the same people who reply “I’m good” to the “how are you?” question.

In a close second place is:

      “from the get-go”,

which seems to have crept into everyday parlance too.

Males or females standing in a circle holding things that look like oversized matchsticks squawking at each other after a bunch of eejits have kicked a ball around a patch of grass with weird markings on it and flashing adverts around the edge annoys me.

Regrettably some words and sayings have now come into acceptable use. As I'm a dinosaur they still grate on me. I'm still stuck in the grammatical past.

I just received an email offering me something "for free". As "for" is a preposition and "free" is a noun it is grammatically incorrect. A noun should not be preceded by a preposition.

Have these sort of rules been consigned to history and is it now considered that almost anything goes?

I still delete most advertising emails that have what I consider grammatically incorrect English. :paladin:

I have no problem with social sites such as GC having misspellings and incorrect grammar but draw the line at official missives, advertising and educational research documents. I'm sure there are many other types as well as I am a Grumpy Old Man! :old:

For free annoys me too, as does the misuse of less and fewer and don't get me started on would of!

'Corter'. My friend will be 25 in July, so she has reached her 'corter' century.
QU.......QU......QU.....IT'S QUARTER, Why is that now apparently unacceptable?

I got awful peed off with Sunak saying crystal clear.
Starmers dad was a toolmaker. If I hear that again I'll scream loud enough to smash sunak's best crystal chandelier

Dave Gorman in one of his shows featured "from the get-go" as many people mishear it as "from the gecko".

'Reach out' is making me want to reach out and do serious damage.
What's wrong with ' contact'. A BBC reporter said that he reached out to a people trafficker. What??
I'd say 'reach out' can be used if you're rescuing a drowning person or if you're in an enclosed space and want to grab hold of something outside that space. It does not mean contacting Amazon to see why your toaster hasn't arrived.

Sorry if it's been mentioned before, but...
Fred, where Bob had had, "had", had had "had had". "had had" had had the teacher's approval.
They don't write 'em like that any more.

I agree @BB3. Sometimes I'd like to have the ability to reach through the telephone line and poke that person!

I get very annoyed with some people writing messages in a truncated "telegram" style. It is such a lazy and rude style of communication that does not fit with polite conversation. I can understand the need to be brief where you are charged per word however why the need otherwise?

On occasion I have caught myself responding in similar fashion and then I am angry with myself!

Just seen a member 'reaching out' on one of these threads :gaah: so probably a younger contributor. Not their fault, but it IS our problem, because we have to grit our dentures and put up with such populist expressions. T'was ever thus, I suppose.
