I wouldn't want to be the person who tries to put 'Yes' to that question as a joke!

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned "gifted". Someone on GW said they had been gifted a plant. What happened to "given"?

Maybe the speaker is trying to bring out the attractive side of the transaction. I mean, they wouldn’t say that they were “gifted” a thick ear or syphillis. Or maybe they would.

Some might think "get some while you still can".

One of our children's teachers once said to us re an out-of-print work which the school had in their library: We could always borrow you that book.

Not one word, but 'how to generally massacre a beautiful language'. The following is an example of a message received recently. (Apologies for the fact it's in 'furrin'. LAO will get it.....).
"Ct un peu trop tôt pour vs répondre et justement c pr cela g prcisée de ne pas le prdre ml car je suis trs gntlle avec les [URL masquée pour votre sécurité] vs en faites pas pr le coût pr le ret. Vs svz si ct pr moi j'aurai accepté mais g dit ct pr offrir.Pour moi tant qu'il y a une bne comm entre nous c déjà trs agrble. Une bne jné à vs " It did provide an hour or so of entertainment trying to fill in all the missing vowels and make some sense of it, but if that's the way the world's going, I really, really want to get off. Why????? Is everyone so busy and rushed nowadays? Back when ink and paper were precious commodities, I could understand the economising, but tapping on a keyboard? In fact, the lengths some go to in order to twist and abbreviate, it must take them longer to compose a masterpiece of text-twaddle than to write it properly in the first place! And breathe.....

@noisette47 I agree that abbreviating words (I usually consider it misspelling) is something I have always disliked.

The use of acronyms is another thing that I dislike and I tend not to read most posts on here that use acronyms as short forms - except those that are normally used as acronyms of organisations.

Other people like them but I find TLA's :heehee: (three letter acronyms) jarring and I can't be bothered to try and work out what they are supposed to be saying. :noidea:

You'd love it here, @shiney  The French are obsessed by acronyms from Government level downwards (or upwards depending on your opinion of politicians :roflol:).

Governmental department acronyms are part of those included in organisations that I mentioned but if they contact me for information and use acronyms in their communications I just ask them to reword their communications in a form of English that I can understand. :roflol:

Probably already been mentioned but pre order.....unprecedented.......going forward.......can I help you ( when said without the least intention of doing so ).
As for gifted ???? Presumably as Xmas approaches, people will receive "gives" instead of presents.
One thing I must own up to is writing "tho" instead of "though" - even tho I don't tend to abbreviate other words

I used to love testing my foreign students on the different pronunciations of thou, though, thought, through and thorough.

Some might say it would be a good start ”not to split your infinitives”, but hey, times change(*)!

(*) Options facultatives pour “times change”: “Thank Goodness” – “More’s the pity” – “Il faut bien [“Y faut bien”] – “Never mind, eh” – “Get over it” – “Get a life” – “Time(less) oblige” – “It’s all relative” – “Look the other way” – “It won’t make you blind” - … and many more (j’en passe et des etc.)

That would make an excellent “rap” ... might be a bit over-written, tho!

I speak fairly fluent French @noisette47 but it took me a few minutes to work that out. I don't always understand my children when they use a lot of French slang and abbreviations when they chat together. We moved to France when the 4 of them were between 2 and 9.
