Words that get on your nerves

To all of us north of the border, happy Burns’ night. And if the haggis is too hot, happy burns night.

 

I came across this "early doors" for the first time a few weeks back, it was the woman who does the weather carol something or other on breakfast TV.

I've watched it for years and I'm sure she has only just started saying it.
And I think she meant early in the morning.

 

We have ours on the 5th November.

 

Yes, it seems to have caught on as a 'trendy' expression these days. But those in the 'know' can more fully appreciate it's true origins!

 

@pete, I found myself using that expression just after this conversation started. I had to be up particularly early one next morning so said to OH that I was having an early doors that night! …meaning I was to have an early night to get up early

 

I’ve never watched a single second of Love Island, but this article about one of the contestants seems to suggest something more than I would ever want to watch on tv. Or anywhere else.

 

What drives me mad is referring to any of the people who appear in 'reality' TV shows, which of course are entirely scripted and not in the slightest bit real, as stars.

 

Me neither.......... the word "reality" has long lost it's correct definition IMO.

I've only heard it on the TV as well, one chap who says it a lot is one of the 'experts' on Bargain Hunt (Yes I watch it sometimes when I'm having dinner, because I like antique things) and he's from Wiltshire so if it's a northern saying I don't know why he says it so often.

Maybe I shouldn't say it gets on my nerves, it doesn't really, it's just that it's new to me. There are things people say around here that really get on my nerves !

 

Even the news programmes these days are not always reality.

Here’s a chap who likes to “speak truth to power”.

 

I'd have thought "Speaking truth to power" is what everybody would like to do, but is often worried about the consequences if they do.

 

Even that date thing with Cilla Black was a bigger fix than I thought. My son’s friend was on it and the couple are picked out at the pre show drinks party. He was not picked.

 

So if there's a pre-show party, everyone's already met each other too, so they're having to act really hard to be surprised when the screen goes back.
