Words that get on your nerves

How about the widespread use of ‘carnage’. The traffic jam was carnage this morning. There were so many people trying to get served at the same time it was carnage.
No it wasn’t.

 

I have to remind myself from time time that while English is the most precise, exact and expressive language going. It is also continuously growing, changing and evolving.
Over the centuries words have been adopted and absorbed from the invaders and the invaded, it has changed and grown in my lifetime and will continue to do so long after I'm gone.
So I have to try and be tolerant of some of these changes and new usages, I don't always succeed.

 

Yeh... but... no... still gets on your nerves, innit?

 

Literally: one of the most abused words in the English language!
My heart was literally in my mouth. No it wasn't, you'd be chewing it!

 

What language do you reckon the word 'penguin ' comes from?

Googleth not!

 

Or even "So I was like literally gob smacked"

 

You literally deserved to be gobsmacked for saying that

 

Staycation....really annoys me. That to me means staying at your own home anyway.....not going on holiday anywhere in England.

 

The sickeningly overused 'super' in front of everything now.

People saying 'right?' at the end of a sentence. Americans say it, it's fine over the pond, not here. Stoppit.

 

Not a word or phrase but.....pronouncing H... haitch

That super annoys me too. Even people who should know better are super inclined to use it. There is a superabundance of the word super even in the efforts of TV and newspaper journalists. @Mrs. B.
