    Hi Marley ;)
There is some guttering to clear out and others that need replacing. Anti bird wire for the chimney pots and a bit of stone pointing up there too. I have to replace six glass panes, one at top left, one at middle left and four in the conservatory roof. About half a days work on the glazing but I ought to be able to drag it out for at least two days! [IMG]

Pleased to see you're getting out and about again, Pal, but take it easy.

Look at my Country Life mill thingy ... just up your street (or lane here) ... sorry, I probably missed taking some important working mechanisms but there was t'other half, estate agent (Dutch), his son and the old Portuguese woman who owns the place so it was quite distracting !!!!

The new watermill bit (look at the site I posted and you can see it in a huge room ... 80sqm in fact) was just hand made when them miller died ... at a cost of 1,000 Euros ...

The Sir Thomas Buildings must be in Sir Thomas street - blindingly obvious, d'uh!

Have walked past there many a time..... it's where the Liverpool Education Authority was housed. I wonder where you could find out...... The Liverpool registry office for records of his birth? Or find out what the building housed before, when he must have worked out of it? Maybe there would be some sort of record....... But, of course, Liverpool was badly blitzed, so you never know what records might have been destroyed (it's down near the docks, by the way....)

All I've got so far, is that the buildings there were listed in 1975 - which doesn't help a bit!

[IMG] I was just having a little look Pal & I found this mention of a William Bennett here. Not sure if it is the same one as yours, but he is an engineer ...!!!! The time seems about right too.. I have done a copy & paste of the paragraph I found.. This is it...

I had not yet taken out a patent for the steam hammer. The reason was this. The cost of a patent at the time I invented it was little short of #500, all expenses included. My partner was unwilling to lay out so large a sum upon an invention for which there seemed to be so little demand at that time; and I myself had the whole of my capital embarked in the concern. Besides, the general depression still continued in the iron trade; and we had use for every farthing of money we possessed. I had been warned of the risk I ran by freely exhibiting my original design, as well as by sending drawings of it to those who I thought were most likely to bring the invention into use. But nothing had as yet been done in England. It was left for France, as I have described, to embody my invention in an actual steam hammer. I now became alarmed, and feared lest I should lose the benefits of my invention. As my partner declined to help me, I applied to my brother-in-law, Willam Bennett . He was a practical engineer, and had expressed himself as highly satisfied with its value. He had also many times cautioned me against "publishing" its advantages so widely, without having first protected it by a patent. He was therefore quite ready to come to my assistance. He helped me with the necessary money, and the invention was placed in a position of safety so far as my interests were concerned. In return for his kindness I stipulated that the reimbursement of his loan should be a first charge upon any profits arising from the manufacture of the steam hammer; and also that he should have a share in the profits during the period of the patent rights. Mr. Bennett lived for many years, rejoicing in the results of his kindness to me in the time of my difficulty. I may add that the patent was secured in June 1842, or less than two months after my return from France.

    I found it here...

I don't know if this is your William Bennett, you need to scroll down the page to get to that paragraph...!! :D
