For backup I have a couple of external USB drives - all my photos and precious files go on these. One drive is stored away from my house at a relatives (just in case of catastrophe at home). I use a very good free software utility to back up, it's simple and foolproof: cobian backup (this won't create disk images like Dave W is talking about, it only backs up data files).

Alway's keep at least two copies of everything you consider precious, hard drives fail sometimes, USB sticks fail very regulary.

Looks like a good external backup is a necessity then so I will have to look into that
    very soon!

and Dave, the reason I am hoping to get a small Acer is so that I can use it in hospital,
if they will let me, and when I am convalescing at home. I still have my desk top but as
it is now 6+ years old I really should change it so still looking for a desk top with XP :)

Sorry to hear you're to go in hospital.

As for the laptop, just take it.

In my life, I've always subscribed to the view that if you ask someone "in authority" if you can do something which can't make much difference to them one way or another, there's a good chance they'll say no. If you instead you just go ahead and do it, they usually haven't the b"""s to say you shouldn't have.

Most hospitals have now accepted that mobile phones etc., don't affect any hospital equipment, it's just that many people (like me) find them annoying in certain situations.

Just don't let it out of your sight if you can't lock it up.

jjordie, sorry that you've got to go into hospital. Doghouse's advice is good. My sister is a Nurse and she says that hospitals vary in their policy in allowing mobile phones/laptops etc. Her hospital allow them to be used in the wards discretely BUT they don't allow them to plug them into the mains (something to do with not being PAT tested) - so just make sure your laptop is fully charged before you go in.

Thanks for the advice DR and JWK. I will make sure it is PAT tested.
I read in the booklet that you are not allowed to use the hospital internet but
it should be available on the 'Hospedia' TV and telephone system. Don't know
    how much they charge :skp:

Stay away from those sort of facilities, they are usually horrendously expensive.

I don't have the Acer Aspire but do have a little Samsung Netbook which is magic as a second computer. I use it for business and it fits great into a small backpack - or even a large handbag.

Great for browsing and basic word stuff - useless for anything that needs to show a lot on the screen - Excel for instance.

It cost about he same as the acer from Amazon.

I can't understand why they only sell them with 1GB RAM though - it is slow ans well as small and needed an upgrade - which is as easy to fit as a battery in the Samsung, to 2 GB straight away. BUT you have to remove the 1GB and buy and fit a 2GB - total madness.

I think the 2 GB RAM was about £20.00.

Oh and get a 'dongle' for net access - whoever you have your mobile with should be able to give you a good deal.

Agree 1GB is not enough but I don't know if I am clever enough to change to 2GB,
and I only have a day or two to get a laptop and have a lttle 'play' on it before I
    go.

Also a dongle sounds good :D

Hope you get out of hospital PDQ Jjordie and make a quick and full recovery.
The Acer should be just fine for your purpose.

Good luck to you with your new hip.
I had mine just over a year ago.

    "Wouldn't be without it!"

Here's a few tips if you don't mind me mentioning them.

After the operation keep your leg elevated for as long as you can, it'll help limit the huge amount of swelling you get in the whole of your leg. You tend to do a lot of reading when there and it's easy to forget if your absorbed in a book.
But keep at the exercises as they won't let you go home until you can walk up a flight of stairs using one crutch and carrying the other.

Make sure they give you a "grabber" to help you put on your socks and underwear while you're still in hospital.

I was back driving after six weeks and playing golf after eight, not any better mind (for both!)

Doghouse, I back my files up onto a Maxtor but I don't know how to back up the Outlook address book as I don't know how to find it. Is there an easy way to get to it?

Shiney; Outlook stores Contacts, emails & calendar in one big file with the extension ".pst".

    Mine is stored in:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst"

Do a search in all subfolders starting at the top level of your C:\ drive for *.pst to find yours.

(When I back up my ".pst" file I have to make sure outlook is closed otherwise it fails)

    Hi Shiney,

    Yes there is

    Open Outlook Express
    Click on "file"
    Scroll down to "Export"
    Click on Adress Book (WAB)
and select where you want to send it.
