No it's unheated ( although we do have a heater if really required) , my hubby has made a purpose built frame within it that is bubble wrapped in winter and it gets surprisingly warm ....I tend to escape into it with a mug of tea and talk to my plants in the winter!:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

He's also built a huge 'coldframe' that runs along the length of our house wall which is about 6ft high and has 3 shelves. We also have another low level cold frame too that is now home to my strawberry plants and some hardy plant and shrub cuttings that I took from my parent's garden earlier this year. I will throw a load of horticultural fleece over the plants in both cold frames if the temps get to below minus.:dbgrtmb:

Hardy means that they can usually stay outside in the ground during winter.
If they are in pots it's best to move them to a more shelter spot and perhaps bubble wrap their pots to help protect their roots.
Nevertheless even some hardy plants may be better off with a layer of fleece if it gets really cold.
Best to read up on each plant as they all differ, plus all gardens vary a lot too, depending on the way they face and which part of the country you are in.

As you may have noticed, I'm about as South as is possible....so our winters are a bit milder.........so I'm told!!!;)

Meant to add that the reason I'm over wintering my hardy cuttings in a cold frame this year is because they are still babies and have yet to develop a good strong root system....next spring :fingers crossed: I will hopefully plant them out into their final homes.

That takes me back Upsy. When I was gardening at a military hospital. I had two 75ftx about 10ft greenhouses. The lenhth of one house had a built on condframe, divided into sections. The greenhouses were heated by hot water/gas. I spanned the gap between the houses by adding a polythene roof and this gave me a fair bit of extra bench space.

Back to the cold frames. I would set a good layer of lawn mowings down, stand any pots needing winter protection, ans then infill with mowings. A lot of heat was generated. Before closeing for the night, the frames would be closed down. Winter, frosts and snow. This called for the frame lites to be additionally covered with hessian. All this meant extra work. But IMO you either love gardening or you walk away and find alternative employment. Watching the videos of the victorian garden. Reminds me so much of those days. If I could do it all again. YES.

              Aloha everyone,

It has been a busy few days. Lots of pressure hosing and some moving around of pots to let me do the hosing as we have over 100 pots on the patio. :rolleyespink:

Today will be the start of raking leaves and will go on, intermittently, for a couple of months. :phew:

Lewis should be coming in today to give a hand and I think I'll get him to dig over and compost one of my veg plots as it's too heavy work for me. That should start making way for the raked leaves to be compost.

Two new external hard drives arrived yesterday :blue thumb: so I need to get them set up and plugged into the computer and I hope I have enough USB ports. Another new computer arriving shortly and that will need setting up as well. I've, somehow, got to find space for all of them . With all the extra online things being done because of coronavirus we both need access to a computer at the same time. I've set up five online bridge clubs and play six times a week. Before coronavirus I was able to go out to the clubs but can't now.

@CanadianLori best wishes to Sam :grphg:

              @moyra I hope you're feeling a bit better :grphg:

              Keep well

              Aloha!

Gosh where did the week go !!!!! Can't believe it's Friday already!!!:yikes:

Hope to get a serious gardening session in today, must start to lift and re-home some plants into their winter abode. Time is passing so quickly and I don't want to be caught out by a sudden frost appearance !

Thanks @Mike Allen for your useful advice.:) We also use carpet off cuts for additional protection when things get seriously nippy too.....brrrr !!!! I don't want to think that far ahead yet.:nonofinger:

Keep safe in these testing times everyone.:spinning:

                      Good day
Sam is much better today as far as being comfortable. The specialists are all duking it out over exactly what is wrong. I scolded them all and told them I did not believe for a minute that she has crohns given the current situation. Now they are looking for the real cause of her problems :blue thumb:

This morning I adjusted the timers for the greenhouse LED's to coordinate with the changing hours of daylight. And I made sure the water bins for the capillary systems in the indoor set up are full.

I'm going to start preparing linings and fashion fabrics this morning for making the drapes due out next week. (and do some laundry in between each step)

Today, tomorrow and Sunday are all supposed to be sunny days so I want to be done inside and be outside for the afternoons to clear more of the sad looking annuals from the garden. And if I get it done by Sunday, I'll be ahead of the 4 days of rain predicted to follow :)

Have a lovely day all and do please play safe!
