I’m in Bury Lancashire and was born there too, my hobbies, gardening obviously, playing my keyboard/piano, walking and when I get chance a little reading , I did do years of Ballet dancing and always got 110% on my exams, I dreamed of going to Royal ballet school but was told by my teacher that you had to have lots of money for that, I was heart broken, all that time and effort wasted. Your tiles look lovely Vicky very affective

@Flumpy I had a piano teacher tell me to give up because the ends of my fingers are too tapered from the pad up to get a good flat "end" . I still goof around on the piano no matter what that nasty man said!

Oh how I wish Dahlias would overwinter here but no, our winters are too harsh for them. I've been thinking of digging up and overwintering in a dry place, the rhyzomes as an experiment this year.

It is another sunny day and the guessers say we're only going up to about 80f.

I've got lots to get done today so I'd better get going.

Most people I know dig them up over here too Lori, I use to until a couple of years ago. The ones in pots are stored under the staging in our unheated greenhouse. All the others are just left out as I found if a bit of a faff lifting them as the big ones have a huge mass of tubers. I do dig down a bit to take off some of them to propagate though.

I then add a really thick layer of mulch and leaves over them after the frost has blackened the leaves and they have been cut right back. I use the now emptied large patio pots that are filled with bags of polystyrene shavings to cover over the mulch...this usually is around early November tme ( guided by our 1st frost) these stay undisturbed until around April . Uncovered they soon begin to shoot but I tend to cover the shoots with upturned clear plastic bottles ( bottoms removed of course) at night for another month or when the leaves have grown a bit bigger as the slugs seem to lose interest in them then.

But digging them up ( when smaller) is easy. I tend to save the use compost from my summer bedding planters , spreading it out to check for any unwanted lurkers and to dry out completely . Once the first frost had hit them I dug them up , cleaned and checked the tubers ( dividing if so wished) then they were spread out and left to dry for a few weeks. Next I put them in trays or pots and covered them with the prepared spent compost. These were either stored in the garage or in the unheated greenhouse ...I don't even think I dampen them with water until very early Spring to wake them from their Winter dormancy. Once really growing and the last frost date has past they were planted back out into the borders.

I have far too many now and so far I haven't lost any by leaving them insitu in the ground.

Just had sad news, Sharon a lady I worked with at my old chemist as passed away peacefully this am at home feel so sorry for the family

 

Sorry to hear that @Flumpy , is she the lady you were talking about the other day?

 

yes it is, she was only diagnosed two months ago so sad, she was ready to retire next year too

Lovely fluffy rabbits @Upsydaisy I said it at 3 o'clock when Bella woke me to go out.

I don't like August myself, the air always feels heavy and oppressive. I always used to wish the school holidays were in June, it's much nicer.

@Flumpy Sorry to hear of your friend. It is shock when it is quick but can be a blessing. My mother went in three days.

@Michael Hewett I don't like July or August.

It is a bright, slightly breezy start to the day. I think T'other Half is grocery shopping today. He has no set days. I am expecting a live plant from Spain and some seeds from Germany to play with and nuture.

Very true indeed, my mum passed away without ever waking up within 2days....op on the Monday and slipped away Wednesday lunchtime.. Dad was diagnosed on the Thursday and left us on the Sunday.
Hard for the loved ones to have to come to terms with but a true blessing for our dearest......and that's the thought we should hold onto.

@Flumpy that is sad and also nasty that the poor woman didn't get to enjoy some retirement years before her death. It seems so unfair and also sadly, gives some validity to the saying, "only the good" ..

It is sunny again and predicted to be another hot day. The guessers say that late this afternoon or early evening we will get a lightning show and some water to go with it

Granddaughters are coming for lunch today. I'm going to barbecue some hamburgers and I cheated and bought a chocolate fudge cake for dessert. The youngest is turning twelve on the 9th of this month and since next weekend before her birthday is not my son's turn with them, I'm doing cake and candles. She'll get her birthday money too. Hopefully she'll buy another pair of earrings or something equally nice. I think they took it to heart when I told them that buying pizza for the whole family only results in free pooh the next morning for everyone whereas nice things like jewelry last forever. Sounds nasty but their mother was talking them into spending their gift money on pizza and snacks for her household and then the girls were left with nothing.

So, all in all, I'm in for a pleasant day. I hope everyone else has a good one too. Oh, just realized- you're wondering why this activity on a Monday - it is Civic Holiday here.

A few chores inside the house and out in the garden this morning.
This afternoon I'm off to see my sister and her little grandson ( my gorgeously cheeky great nephew). Should be great fun !
