Yes, husband and I share this type of driving, he is able to actually nap when I am driving. I can usually go 4 hours. But when we go to car shows, and tow the car in the trailer, its all him driving.

 

@RowlandsCastle , if the owner you are looking for has died it may be possible to look on Ancestry (other genealogy sites are available) if you know the full name. A death record could show the birth date.

 

@redstar - I guess being a bit of a history nut I only really enjoy towns and cities which have a lot of history well preserved in the buildings.
We are very spoilt in this country and Europe with many buildings of 500 years plus, a lot of around 1000 years in age and some around 2000 years. The stuff coming out of the latest excavations in Pompeii is incredible.
Boston has preserved its history well and I tend to like University towns and cities anyway - they always have a bit of extra buzz.
Bar Harbor felt like stepping back 100 years in terms of buildings and preserved features. Am I correct in thinking that it was either the home or the holiday home of people such as the Astors, Rockefellers and Vandebilts? Big money there which explains why it is so attractive and well tended.

 

@RowlandsCastle, Bluejayway has beaten me to it. The General Register Office's Birth, Death & Marriage indexes are available online on most genealogy sites up to about 2006 when I last checked. However, if you don't know the previous owners full names (although they should be on your deeds or Land Registry certificate) I wouldn't be able to check and even then hundreds of the same name might turn up!

@redstar, that sounds a really interesting trip. I guess you're a lot younger than us as 5 hour drives are a bit too long for us these days.

 

@Ladybird - glad the sauces went down well and hope the plants are settling in. Sounds as though you haven't needed to water them in much!

I bought some bare root perennials the other week. Tiny plants and I dare not plant them direct into the cold heavy clay. So they're in pots - sulking in the cold and I now need to decide what to do with them when we go away (a May holiday wasn't even vaguely on the cards when I bought them!) . Will probably just sink them still in the pots in a raised bed. That way, they're a bit insulated from the cold soil, they get watered if it rains and, hopefully, won't dry out too muchif it doesn't.
No idea what I'll do with the seed trays in the potting shed (nothings germinated yet). Will probably just have to bring those indoors and put them on a nth facing windowsill. Not warm enough for them to be outside yet, but they'll roast in the shed when the sun comes out.

@Topbird, my Bestie is going away on holiday tomorrow with her Mum and daughter for a fortnight. When I arrived to pick her up this morning she asked if I would do a favour for her. Of course I said 'yes' so now I am nursemaid to her Mum's collection of 20 coleus seedlings, 2 fuchsia, 1 callibrochoa, 1 ivy leaved pelargonium and 1 lysimachia cuttings. The coleus seedlings are titchy but some are already showing the distinctive markings on their leaves. I referred to these as HER 'babies' which made me smile at your last comment. I do think your babies will do just fine on that windowsill.

Thanks for the sympathy, dear ones. It's surprising how sore a little cut can be, isn't it?
Oh @Topbird, you're so right about seedlings being our little babies. As for looking after someone else's, @Ladybird4 , I couldn't bear the responsibility!

 

@pattie and @Topbird, you are beginning to make me very nervous indeed. A fortnight is a l.o.n.g. time isn't it? I think I need a drink!

 

I think I would be nervous too @Ladybird4, don't forget to give the plants a drink too!

Lunch went very well. My guests already knew each other and were very chatty. The food went well too.

It has been raining most of the day but it stopped for long enough to show my friends the garden when they arrived.

 

@Busy-Lizzie, I am pleased to read that your lunch went well and also that the rain paused enough for you to show your guests round the garden.

Good evening everyone. Good to catch up with all your doings. I'm away on a work trip so early start today, long drive and busy busy, now settled into my hotel room for the night. Planning a more leisurely drive home tomorrow, with a long stop at Hidcote for a wander round the gardens. At the moment the forecast is dry but cool, fingers crossed they're right about the dry part.

 

From your description then maybe for both areas I will add one more day to stay. I also like history quality places.
Your reference to Astors, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts brought two things to mind. Newport, Rhode Island, an awesome place to visit and see "their" mansions they built many years ago "prior" to Taxes. And the 2nd thing there is a book called Creature of Jekyll Island, which discusses the Asters, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts and other rich folks and how they influenced the start of the Federal Reserve in the USA. Reason for its title is The story goes that those rich named folks spent their winters at Jekyll Island, which is just off the state of Georgia. It was in their "winter mansions" on Jekyll Island where they had their secret meetings to develop the financial animal of the USA we see today. My husband and I both toured Jekyll Island, Georgia, in fact we rode horses along the beach there. The book is quite thick, and leans toward the financial flavor with lots of history and names of those involved, I have yet to finish it. But as I read through what I did, I would say, oh, that's why that is, and I see that now, etc. So when "they" say, there is a "group" that controls things, they are not far from the truth.
