        Morning all.

        We've overslept and we are still having coffee in bed, 9.40am.

        We watched the D Day celebrations last night and I've recorded this morning's ones.

        We've had thunderstorms in the night which woke me several times. Now I have a headache, rare for me.

        OH has booked a table for lunch today at a restaurant with an outdoor terrace with a beautiful view. When he booked the forecast was sunny and dry. Now it's thunderstorms until 2pm.

          We owe a debt that can never be repaid … but that doesn’t mean we should stop trying.

          For the Fallen

          With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
          England mourns for her dead across the sea.
          Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
          Fallen in the cause of the free.

          Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
          Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
          There is music in the midst of desolation
          And a glory that shines upon our tears.

          They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
          Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
          They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
          They fell with their faces to the foe.

          They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
          Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
          At the going down of the sun and in the morning
          We will remember them.

          They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
          They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
          They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
          They sleep beyond England's foam.

          But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
          Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
          To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
          As the stars are known to the Night;

          As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
          Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
          As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
          To the end, to the end, they remain.
          Laurence Binyon

          It was written about their fathers and grandfathers … sadly it became apt for the next generation too … we mustn’t let another generation be remembered by those tragic words.

            Screenshot 2024-06-06 at 10-28-20 Ernest Farr - Russian Arctic Convoy Museum.png A momentous day. My Dad was there, as a 19 year-old, on HMS Obedient which had been diverted from Arctic Convoy duty.
            Amazed to discover, online, some photos of my Dad with his crewmates. He's top left in this pic and his nickname was Champ apparently!

              Unfortunately they are, @Dovefromabove, but in other countries, such as Ukraine and Gaza. That poem is so moving. We in France and the UK now are so lucky. My children have grown up in peace time. I hope my grandchildren do too.

                My mother was de-coding at Bletchley Park and my father was in the Royal Engineers in Burma. They should have been going to University but that had to wait.

                  Hi all

                  Another horrible night, sweating profusely and weird nightmares. Today we are going to Chatsworth, hoping that might calm me down a bit, very brave of Moira to take me out when I am in my current state.

                      I'm afraid that rain has stopped play. I have managed to clear a fair bit of the driveway but nowhere near to finishing. I did rescue a wild strawberry that had seeded itself and I've stuck it in a pot. Its parent plant flourishes outside the back door and is flowering well so I am looking forward to eating some little berries soon.

                        Good morning Ladies & Gentlemen.

                        I've been reading back to all the posts I've missed. I had a very prolonged migraine and didn't want to risk posting nonsense on here (although I suppose I post nonsense at the best of times...). :)

                        I hope Wonky Womble's new car provides trouble-free motoring for her, and I wish her well in everything.

                        Best wishes to @Punkdoc , @steephill , @RowlandsCastle & @Allotment Boy as they bravely battle health issues.

                        I hope your OH's recovery from his hip surgery is progressing well @lizzie27 .

                        Hope your knee is OK now, or at least as OK as possible @Busy-Lizzie .

                        Very beautiful photos @Tui34 .

                        My Mother also has a knee which is liable to give way @Dovefromabove . Best wishes, and my hope for some improvement for you.

                        The dryish spell continues here. There has been the very odd shower, but it has been a long time since there has been any proper rain in this village. There certainly hasn't been enough that I could forgo watering my flowerpots on a daily basis. It has also been unusually cold for June these last couple of days.

                        It has become obvious that my decision to allow all the self-seeded poppies to grow was a mistake. I like poppies as much as the next person, but there is scarcely a flowerpot without a big poppy in it. It is an indictment of my gardening (in)competence that self-sown things grow far, far better than anything which I sowed myself!:)

                        Later today I drive 65km (40 miles) for an orthopaedics appointment. I'm not expecting anything good to come out of it, really just going to keep my G.P. happy.

                        As always - best wishes to all.

                            Thank you @Badly_Maintained that’s kind of you. Migraines are horrible … my late mother suffered with them and my late brother had trigeminal neuralgia which apparently is related. Thankfully all I get is a very occasional visual disturbance. … it’s been a few years since the last one. :fingers crossed: I hope your appointment goes ok.

                              Hello everyone. Love your photos Dove. Say hello to Wonky for me.

                              Thinking about Chadstone, Punkdoc, one of my father’s ancestors worked as some sort of horse person there. I think he was head coachman or similar until he moved to Australia. There was a time when I knew the correct details, but time has wiped it from my memory.
