Well its been heaving down again but fingers crossed I can get into the garden tomorrow. I did get a lot done yesterday. I am signing out for tonight and getting prepared for the Olympic opening ceremony tomorrow afternoon. I hope @Busy-Lizzie and her OH have had a smooth journey home.

Evening everybody, had rather a hectic day today starting with the cleaners arriving, then a quick drive down to the village for paper and meds for OH. My bamboo screening roll arrived, next followed by the Sainsbury's delivery and then an Amazon parcel for OH. In between I helped OH get washed and dressed, did some washing and managed to fit in some gardening.
Fortunately, or unfortunately it started to drizzle by three-ish so I was able to have a rest with a cuppa and my feet up. Not too happy with the way I put the bamboo screening up in my new seating area and will have a re-think overnight and sort it out tomorrow hopefully.

That's a real nuisance about the hob @Obelix-Vendée , hope it gets sorted soon.

I was hoping for an hour in the garden after work (as it should be at this time of year) but it was dull with threatening clouds so not very inspiring. I’m hoping for a brighter day tomorrow as that will be my ‘Saturday’ as I’m working this actual Saturday. Wishing everyone some ‘brightness’ for tomorrow, whether that is in the form of some sunshine, a bit of luck, something positive or something to make you smile.

 

I've forgotten how to post a new thread so putting on here instead.

Noticed today some wasps going in and out an airbrick adjacent to our side path not far from from where I'm currently working in the garden and suspect they're making a nest in the cavity. Problem is that I'm very allergic to wasp and bee stings so I need to get rid of them somehow.
Thought of putting a paving slab over the airbrick temporarily to stop them getting in, would this work? I might wait until they are fast asleep though! When would be a good time?

Any help much appreciated.

 

Good morning all. I have my tea after watering my front garden. Strong wind dried soil so quickly. It was comfortable to sleep last night, but from next Sunday, we will again be roasting.
@lizzie27, you mentioned that your son will arrive on holiday in few days. Just warn him on 35℃+ temperatures. Regardless that, I'm sure he will be happy.
I should have an easy day today. Finally after some busy time.

@lizzie27, the paving slab will definitely work as long as it is completely flat against the wall and you are best leaving it there for some time. Wasps are less active in the cool of the evening so that would be a good time to carry out the procedure. I, too, have to be careful around wasps as I go into anaphylaxis, if stung, and its a hospital job then.

 

Just one question about the wasps and airbrick situation - surely if you put a paving slab over the airbrick, this will stop wasps already in there, from getting out that route. Where is the "other side" of the airbrick? Will the only exit for them be into the house, or into a large cavity between an outer and inner wall?
Wasps WILL find a route somewhere, if it exists.

 

A certain member of this household wants to put up red, white and blue bunting today.

Morning all.

We are staying with friends in NW France. Arrived here last night at 8.20pm. We were with my sister in East Sussex on Wednesday night. My brother, Tom, was staying with my sister. He lives in Scotland, near Perth, so it was good to see him. Another brother, Charles, came for dinner. He lives in Hastings.

The ferry crossing was smooth but the boat was very full, lots of children. We rarely take it in the school holidays.

Our friends live down the street where we live in Norfolk. They are selling their French house but I expect it will take a while. We go to my home in Dordogne tomorrow, about a 6hr drive. My knee is fine when driving but very stiff when I get out of the car.

 

I've always associated orange with the Netherlands.

 

Yesterday I made some "A la Mummy ad hoc Marmalade".
Since maturing,(getting old) I have developed a bit of a thing about throwing away perfectly good fruit peel. This marmalade had sweet orange peel, grapefruit peel and a couple of whole lemons in it. There is too much peel to jelly in it for it to be perfect and it has set very firmly but tastes great. I love homemade marmalade, so much nicer than shop bought.
I also jointed a whole chicken, froze 3/4 of it, roasted some for dinner and have a large pot of boiled chicken bones and veg. ready to use as soup stock.
Anyone get the idea I am trying to keep myself occupied?!

Well done Rowland for sewing on some buttons. I remember teaching my son how to use the washing machine, iron a shirt, press a pair of trousers and sew on a button before he went to uni. He did thank me because he was the only one in his group of friends who knew how to use a washing machine.
If you throw anything away it is guaranteed you will be able to find a use for it within a week or two. I think it is called S*ds Law.

 

It is a brighter day today! Watering my patio pots, looking at the Lavender and Agapanthus in full bloom is much more Summer-like!

I’m going to have a morning in the garden and I might watch Olympics later - what time is the opening ceremony?

Re the wasps @lizzie27 - I think being allergic warrants remedial action. Would it be an option to seek professional advice?

Is the orange because William of Orange came from what is now the Netherlands?

 

An odd couple off days, in which I had plans to get several gardening jobs tackled, and instead spent the rainy morning in Ikea, and the dry and sunny one wandering round the shops by the seaside. Very pleased and excited to buy a frying pan which was made in England! Both afternoons, I was too lazy to do anything at all, apart from the usual loading/ unloading the dishwasher, making meals, and feeding the washing machine.
Very annoyed that one of our green bins went down to the roadside in perfect condition, and after being emptied, the lid is now badly broken in two places and hanging off! Not amused. I have emailed the report damage address at the local council, with photos. I’m assuming we will be sent a new bin, but I hope they don’t plan to remove the old one at the same time, as we generate more than enough to fill both bins every fortnight, so I’m not leaving it empty.

 

Good morning all, had a very rude awakening from a very deep sleep at 8.am today - my Hanging Egg Chair arrived. I had slept through the phone ringing, the doorbell and a loud knocking on the front door! Fortunately OH had heard the commotion and struggled to get out of bed, get his sticks and hobbled in to wake me up. I'd woken up earlier at 7 so must have dozed off again. Delivery men were just about to drive off when they saw this demented looking little old lady in bright pink pyjamas waving frantically at them. I felt so dopey I couldn't think straight but they were very kind and apologised profusely for waking me up. Nice young man carried the frame and then the chair itself up the back garden to where I wanted it. All I have to do now is to try to put it together, might have to get help with that as OH obviously can't at the moment.

Gracious, you are keeping busy @Goldenlily26. That marmalade sounds scrumptious.

I must admit I'm a bit dubious about blocking the wasps in the house cavity, wall, they'd probably end up in the loft. Will think about calling in pest control although I believe they charge up to £100 in this area.

@Ergates, What a nuisance about the broken green bin lid. I'd be a bit cautious about filling it up though as I don't think they'll empty it because of the mechanism involved on the lorry.
Hopefully they might let you keep the old one so at least you'll have somewhere to store stuff temporarily.

Right, I'd better get out to inspect this chair and finish off the bamboo screening.
