Tiny bit of drizzle here in the early hours , the previous days storms largely passed us by. Getting a bit desperate for proper rain now. Yesterday at the Allotments the ground was very dry. Have a good weekend everyone.

 

Had a lovely short walk with my daughter yesterday. I had not long come home from walking Robbie when she arrived to take us out for lunch. We went and explored a recently opened water garden near where I live. It has only been open for 10 weeks and was quite busy. A lake full of huge water lilies in full flower is a picture, a medium and a long walk walk around the 33 acres will be explored on other occasions. A cup of tea and my daughter bought a few plants. Lanjeth Water Garden, I visited it many years ago when it was going into decline, it was put up for sale for many years before some paramedics jointly purchased it and have begun to develop and reclaim it.

A pleasant temperature today so I’ll have a potter round the garden to see what needs doing.

I love water lilies @Goldenlily26. When I went to Kew Gardens last year my favourite bit was the giant water lilies - amazing and wonderful plants!

We had a pitter patter of rain, but nothing really significant yesterday. Not much in the forecast, either.
Taking a picnic (and dogs) to the forest, so they can have a good run (though Grand dog will have to stay on lead as he has form for running off)

That garden sounds like my idea of heaven, @Goldenlily26. Anyone been to the Bosherton Lily ponds in Pembroke? Perfection.

Family are touring the Normandy beaches at the moment. They went up in the cable car to Aiguille des glaciers earlier this week. They said it was breathtaking (and very, very expensive )

I have some pygmy waterlilies in my pond, just coming into flower. Dinky, to match the pond size. The red one is always first to open, perfect copies of their giant relatives. Plenty of buds on the other colours so more enjoyment to come.

 

Saturday. 74 degrees , 8am here.
Buckets of rain yesterday. Everything soaked. Just going to do inside stuff.
Did get some shopping done, walking shoes on sale yesterday, decent price 2 for $99.00. Had some Pho for lunch at a restaurant, first time, so no clue if it was up to par or not, it was decent I guess.

Hello all.

I did weeding, tying up of climbing roses and planting pots of parsley, mint and tarragon this morning.

Since then I've been watching the Olympics on the Beeb. Enjoyed the team dressage and the men's floor gymnasts. GB got bronze in both.

 

Quiet day here. It's 26C in the shade outside and has been very muggy but a breeze has come up now and it feels a lot better. I stayed in all morning but have been watering and pottering since lunch nd have come in for a cuppa and to google how to freeze eggs. Our hens are laying steadily and we can't keep up despite sharing with neighbours.

We have a garden near us that is famous for its lotus flowers in August @Goldenlily26 tho we haven't yet been except one Easter when it was underwhelming. Apparently they've gone much more ecological and environment aware since then so it may be more interesting - Parc Floral de La Court d'Aron - Animations A gardening friend has pygmy waterlilies that he stores under the bed in winter......... Our own pond is unlined so the levels vary greatly and that means we can't have waterlilies.

@redstar and @Penny_Forthem the couple at the table next to us yesterday were interesting. She started with a dozen oysters of which he ate 3 or 4. She then had fish and chips while he had nothing until, when she'd almost finished, the waiter brought us a whole grilled lobster with trimmings and sauces. It was for him. She helped him get all the meat out of the two body halves and then had all the claws herself. Fascinating process and they clearly enjoyed it. I've told OH that's what we're having next time.

Now to go out and plant out some Califonia poppies - ivory, not garish.

 

@Obelix-Vendée Planning lots of Lobster when we get to Maine end of August and Nova Scotia. etc. When I was on the west coast in Oregon they have some lovely oysters, found a restaurant that sautes them very gently in rice flour, so good. North Pacific Oysters so good.

 

Good afternoon all. I have had an interesting day so far. First thing was discovering that mine and my neighbours milk must have been stolen off our steps. I am only guessing in that my empty bottle had been taken away and there was a wet ring on my doorstep where I assume my fresh bottle had been left. I rang the dairy that is just up the road and the boss, after hearing my tale of woe, drove round and brought replacements for both myself and my neighbour. It is a bit creepy knowing someone has been prowling about. Still it has made me determined to get my video doorbell installed. I might need a new drill bit. I did a few hours in the garden and then I received a parcel with a corydalis 'Blue Heron' plug plant in it. I got that potted up and watered. Good service though as I only bought the plug on Thursday.

 

It was very wet here first thing this morning @Allotment Boy but soon dried up and it became pleasantly warm.
I am another waterlily fan @Goldenlily26 and @AuntyRach. I remember as a very young child being completely fascinated by the pictures of giant waterlilies with small people sitting on their leaves.
@Penny_Forthem, I remember being on a course for a week in Pemberton where we stayed at a Field Study Centre called Orielton. We were carrying out ecological studies comparing fresh and salt water biomes and Bosherston Lily Ponds were where we did the fresh water studies. It is a stunningly beautiful setting and we were blessed with gorgeous weather the day we spent there. We then moved to the coast and it was shades of the opening day of this year's Olympics. I have never been as wet when outside. When we eventually finished measuring and counting limpets and various other marine organisms we retired to the nearest pub where we completely reduced the bar to a steam room and the locals chatted - with much amusement about us - in Welsh. It was a fabulous week and still lives in my memory despite it being over 50 years ago. All the rooms in Orielton were named after birds and I was in Goldeneye. It was not related to James Bond however!

It's been a lot cooler today so have actually been out gardening. Tied some CD's to a long piece of string suspended over my ripening raspberries as I'm hoping that might keep the birds away.
Well, one can only hope.

Then I started pruning the apple trees and a pear tree, using a long handled pruner. It's a bit heavy for me to use for long and OH usually does that job (obviously not at the moment, although he's recovering well from his replacement hip operation). Done about half and will try to do the rest tomorrow.

When I finished I treated myself to a Magnum sat in my new swing chair - I could get used to that life.

@Goldenlily26 , sounds a nice lunch out, glad you enjoyed it.

@redstar, those shoes were a bargain.

Goodness @Obelix-Vendée, I'm glad that the man at the next table did actually get something to eat eventually!

 

@lizzie27, I've been looking at my front hedge and it is about ready for a haircut. I have a long handled power cutter and I find I need to have more and more 'rests' when using that. Holding the 'on button' whilst wielding the hedge cutter tires my arthritic hands. It is very efficient though and I always have the 'smug face' on when I've finished.

 

We have out here Outlet stores, its where extra supplies, or overage of stuff go and then they are marked down, waiting till August also gets better deals, lots of summer stuff is 70% off. Not just shoes, clothes, house stuff etc.
