A very good morning one and all. Well Storm Lilian struck with a vengeance here overnight. I was woken up at about 05:15 this morning by rain hammering against the window and ferocious winds are now thrashing all the trees and shrubs about. I think its safe to say that I will be confined to barracks again. I feel sorry for my Bestie, her Mum and daughter who are going away for a mini break to a resort near Carnforth. They leave today and return on Monday. I do hope that they get at least one dry day. Now for tea.

Congratulations to your grandson and great-nephew, @lizzie27 and @Ladybird4 - great news :)

It was dark, windy, rainy and very autumnal-feeling an hour ago, but the rain's stopped, the sky is blue and the sun is out now - complete change of atmosphere!

I'm off on my regular visit to see my uncle, then to an art gallery with a friend this afternoon. Have a good day everyone.

Good morning all. Windy here in the south-east - but not as bad as some of you further north and west are experiencing.
My wife amusingly suggested that since it was cooler today, I might think of taking down one of the conifer trees that were ear-marked for removal.
              Huh!!
I don't want to jeopardize my trip to Canterbury tomorrow, to the postcard fairs. Plus I need to buy a new lightweight cagoule (left the other one behind in a cottage whilst on holiday in Sussex), as well as new walking boots (old ones are wearing out, and I want to find new ones before the old ones go entirely).
Keep safe, those more affected by the wind. I've been on the damaging end of strong winds (October 1987), and it's not funny!!
              :hate-shocked:

@LG_ I hope you have a wonderful visit this afternoon. I remember going with my sis to the Picasso exhibition when it came to Liverpool but that was a few years back now.
@RowlandsCastle I thought you had been banned from lumberjacking, or is it just trimming bits off?

Good morning everyone. It's grey and we have wet air - not enough to be called drizzle - but it's calm. Set to go down to 5C in the early hours on Sunday so I'll have to get the summer duvet out again.

I hope Lilian has not caused huge problems for anyone. Pity for your friends @Ladybird4. BIL lives at Nether Kellet so I know they're in shouting distance of Levens Hall and all that wonderful, ancient topiary and Eric Morecambe's statue and excellent fish and chips at Arnside with views across to the bay to fells of the Lakes. I hope you'll be OK at the caravan @Penny_Forthem

Congrats to all proud parents, grand-parents, aunts and uncles whose teens have got the results they hoped for in GCSE's and A levels.

Enjoy your lunch @Busy-Lizzie and your shopping @RowlandsCastle. You too @LG_ Possum and I don't like modern art but in Rome last week she discovered that she "gets" sculpture.

I've been banned from lumberjacking larger trees, but these are about 15ft high, and this would be just trimming pieces off, before removing the trunks later.

                      Morning all!

Congratulations to the hardworking young people (@lizzie27 's grandson and @Ladybird4 's great nephew) on their exam results. One of the benefits of being quite old is no longer having to go through that experience... it was tough enough going back to college in my 40s to get horticultural qualifications, making my brain work again. Though having said that, my father got an MSc from the Open University at the age of 73, having missed out on going to university because of WW2, so perhaps I'm just lazy now. :noidea:

More hedgehog-behind pics last night, and no rodents. Result! The photos aren't very good because the camera isn't far enough away - it has to be in a back corner of the feeding station - so it's hard to tell if we have just the one hog or several different ones.

Off to the physio this morning, to get my shoulder sorted out!

                      Have a good day, everyone.

@Obelix-Vendée , interesting, recommended to empty the septic tank every 8 years??? Wow. Over here the set standard is every 3 years to empty it.

Afternoon all, it was quite windy here though not as bad as up north by all accounts. Glad you're ok @Ladybird4 . Checked round the garden earlier and everything stayed put.
Got out in the garden after lunch and dug up some bearded irises and bergenia.
15ft is quite tall to my mind @RowlandsCastle, I get the feeling you quite enjoy your lumberjack role
Glad your knee is better @Busy-Lizzie, enjoy lunch with your daughter.
Can anybody ID this flowering plant from a bouquet I was given, I have never seen it before. Quite bristly leaves in a rosette around a yellow thistle like Flower?

Good afternoon everyone. The only thing Storm Lilian did was to knock my general waste bin askew but as it had been emptied yesterday there was no mess to clear up thank goodness. The rain stopped mid way through the afternoon but not before a heavy sudden shower began and fell through the skylights of my GH and on to me as I watered my tomatoes and cukes. Cricket was not amused either as he had accompanied me into the GH. The wind is now just a gentle breeze - as predicted and I can actually see some blue patches of sky.
@Liriodendron, I hope that your physio session has afforded you some comfort in your shoulder. My sis-in-law says she always feels worse after.
@Busy-Lizzie, pleased to read that your knee is much improved. I have to 'fess up to having to go up and down the stairs rather crablike and both feet on one step at a time. I've had to do this for a while now. All those years of competitive squash and badminton are more than likely the cause.
Not long to go @redstar. You must be getting quite excited now.
