Anyone have Scott's Emulsion, Syrup of Figs or Malt Extract, they were my favourites. I hated Cod Liver Oil, Iodine, it stung on wounds and a yellow sulphur which I had put on my nails to stop me biting them, very bitter. Bitter Aloes?. Also Potassium Permanganate which made your skin go purple. Warm oil in ears for earache, chewing a clove for toothache. The juice from sliced onion under sugar for a sore throat. Dolly Blue on wasp/bee stings. I am amazed I am still alive!

      Evening all.

I hope everyone is doing ok.

@Goldenlily26 I really don’t fancy onion juice for a sore throat! That’s really adding insult to injury! At least the others have a bit of science behind them.

I’m on a 3 day stretch so an early night will be had, although Bake Off starts tonight!

I'm with you on that one @Busy-Lizzie. The pictures on the news were horrendous.
@Liriodendron, I wonder if unmaggoty blackberries are also a symtom of the decline in our insect populations. I remember years ago after a car drive, getting home to find dead bugs all over my car headlight and windscreen and nowadays nothing.
@LG_ sorry to hear you have a bit of a cough but lovely to hear about your two talented girls. Hope you feel better soon.
@Penny_Forthem, reading about your sugar thermometer made me go and check that mine was still where I left it. It was.

Eek @Goldenlily26 that is a veritable chemist's collection of substances. I do remember most of those but I have to say I agree with @AuntyRach in shuddering at the thought of onion and sugar!

@Ladybird4 when we drove through France to catch the ferry there were lots of dead insects on my windscreen. I was almost glad when there was a heavy rain shower that got rid of most of it.

I can only imagine the devastation of being flooded and having to sort out mess and insurance. Hard to deal with and manage anger, loss, frustration.

Busy day here. Got the well bed cleared and mostly replanted but have had to leave a bare patch till OH gets the wall fixed. Lots of rain expected tomorrow and he's golfing over by Angers on Thursday so it'll be a few days yet.

Then got one of my fancy mahonias planted in the bed by the gate and gave it two golden variegated vinca minors and some clumps of autumn daffs (steenbergia lutea) for company. Had to stop then to get cleaned up for dance class and make some pasta for dinner.

Dancing again was good @Ladybird4 but also frustrating. Valse lente - slow, or English, waltz tonight and there are people there who couldn't do a simple whisk which is really basic stuff.

@Penny_Forthem my very old jam thermometer exploded. Had to buy a new one.

@AuntyRach I hope you get a good sleep. @LG_ your two girls sound like they're busy and enjoying themselves. Now you'll have scope for some "you time".

Tired now so sweet dreams all.

Good morning one and all. I had a nice visit with Jack (ex cat sitter) yesterday. He is doing well for 94! He did say his back had been playing up though and I had to get some paracetamol from his kitchen cupboard for him. I do have to say I was shocked at the amount of medicines that were in this cupboard. I'm surprised he doesn't rattle when he walks. He was delighted with the brownies I had made for him and I'd also taken some soft chocolates for him. He has myasthenia gravis and finds swallowing anything other than soft foods or things diced up small, rather difficult.
More bulb planting today but I need to pop up to the village first to pick up part of my prescription that had not been available the last time I called in.

Grey and dismal today after yesterday's splendid weather. Walked about 250metres morning and then in the afternoon and did my exercises twice!! Feeling stronger but this damp weather isn't so good. I think folding up and storing summery clothes could be a good idea although we still have warm days.

That's a lot @Goldenlily26 As an asthmatic child, mum used to burn a sulphur stick in my bedroom before bed. I don't recall it did much good. Suffered terribly. Still on treatment but so well handled now.

No preserves for me this year and anyway, I still have a stock of fig chutney and jam (black figs), tomato relish which I love with crackers and cheddar. I think there's still some apricot chutney there too. Not enough tomatoes to do a decent potful of tomato concentrate, I've given them away or enjoyed them in salad. Only a couple of packs of ratatouille in the freezer for winter. But that is just this summer - not so good for growing. Still have green tomatoes on the vines and aubergines. Best in show is butternut this year. Monsters and from 4 plants, I have a good dozen!

The day before yesterday was the annual flying ants and landing all over the tiles day!! Thousands of them! Happens every year.

I have a cleaning lady coming tomorrow to just run over the floor and do some dusting. I will do a load of washing and she can carry the basket out to the line. I should manage to hang the stuff out myself. Walking with one crutch easily and do some paces with no crutch at all.

@Ergates. I hope you will be better for the cruise next week. Or maybe the fresh air will clean it up for you!!!

                    Enjoy your day everyone.

                      Good morning all!

That sounds like real progress, @Tui34 . Congratulations! Hope the nights are easier to manage too.

Hope you're not rattling round too much in your "empty nest", @LG_ . Takes a bit of getting used to - but as @Obelix-Vendée says, more time for yourself. And the girls will no doubt be having a great time "stretching their wings". Will they be bringing you their dirty washing, or are they thoroughly domesticated? I remember being astonished to find my 18-year-old son had worked out how to repair, tidily, a three-cornered tear in his favourite shirt.

Good luck with the remaining bulbs, @Ladybird4 . I was fortunate that all my remaining bulbs were destined for pots, to cheer up our view from the kitchen window in the spring. Much quicker to fill a pot than dig holes with a bulb planter...

Knit & Natter this morning. I have a bin bag of 100g balls of various colours of wool, un-knitted whilst watching TV in the evening, to deliver to the lady who sells them for charity. Plenty more to be unravelled though!

Morning everyone, very wet here so no volunteer day today. Winter must be coming I had my first Porage of the season this morning.

Yes some of those old recipes were definitely kill or cure. However, Onion and garlic DO have anti-bacterial properties, not sure about the sugar though, surely that would just feed the bugs? Still haven't planted any bulbs yet, most of ours go in pots so might do some in the greenhouse today, that said we mostly do Tulips, so it's still too early for them.

Hello everyone. Physio this morning and then home to look after the dishwasher doctor. Nice man. Found a piece of battered rubber tubing in the outlet pipe. Bit baffling cos I don't cook with anything it might have come from.

We're expecting a storm this afternoon and have already had a couple of downpours so no gardening for me today. Pity as I really enjoyed yesterday - first proper digging and planting gardening since before the knees. I've just been sowing, planting plugs, taking cuttings, pruning and harvesting for over two years.

That sounds promising @Tui34. I haven't quite decided it's time to put the summer stuff away yet. Yesterday I was gardening in a strappy top and thin trousers and it's still warm today tho grismal.

@Ladybird4 I hope he enjoyed his brownies and chocs. Kind of you to keep an eye on him.

Enjoy your knit and natter @Liriodendron and you your day at home @Allotment Boy. No point going out and getting soaked is there?

Have a lovely time in the Cotswolds and at Malvern, @Busy-Lizzie . I'm off to RHS Hyde Hall on Friday.

I still have a cough but decided not to miss my volunteering day today, in the hope that getting on with stuff in the fresh air might help. It did. How's @Ergates ? Hope you're better for your cruise. Good too to hear that progress is ongoing, @Tui34

I already had a fair amount of 'me time' before my nest fully emptied, to be fair! But not mentally, I suppose - always aware of someone needing something. I don't think washing will be coming home as it'll be more of a faff to get it here than to use the launderette in the halls of residence. What Bow likes best is coming home to a well-stocked fridge and larder, and being fed! I'm most looking forward to stuff staying clean (ish) or tidy (ish) once I've cleaned or tidied it  . OH works v long hours so won't mess stuff up for days on end, ha! I'm planning a big autumn sort out, which hasn't properly started yet due to having felt poorly. I'm something of a hoarder so it won't be a full clear out, but still quite cleansing I think.

I can relate to your surprise at Jack's medicine cupboard, @Ladybird4 - it's the same with my very-nearly-94-year-old uncle. It's become a full time job for him to keep track of all his pills. He's doing very well on them though, sounds like Jack is too.

And I've realised that I didn't congratulate @AuntyRach on passing the exam - well done :dbgrtmb: !

Evening folks - I hope everyone is ok.

Tired here but after tomorrow I have a long weekend off. I’m going to a craft and well-being morning on Sunday so looking forward to that.

Anyone watching Bake Off?? I liked the twist of asking them to taste the Battenberg to work out the recipe!

Enjoy what’s left of the day everyone.
