As @Obelix-Vendée said, I too was so pleased to see you back @Badly_Maintained but deeply shocked and saddened by your news. I hope that you and your Mum take strength from one another and that you recover well after that major surgery.

@Penny_Forthem it was so nice to hear the good news about your OH.
@AuntyRach I have solved several of the puzzles - not even looked at the wheel numbers one yet. My brother-in-law swears I have a weird brain! I probably have

Should I 'fess up to being a total jigsaw and cryptic crossword addict as well and I annoy at least one friend by refusing to look at the picture on the box lid when I am working on one. I think she's more annoyed I won't let her look either when she's helping me.

Afternoon all, good news from @Penny_Forthem but sad news from @Badly_Maintained which I was sorry to read. My condolences. Look after yourself and your Mother but don't overdo it.

I haven't got that kind of brain @Ladybird4, absolutely useless at most crosswords - except gardening ones of course. Haven't done any jigsaws for years, perhaps I should try some in the New Year. Do hope you feel better soon.

Drizzly here but warmer. Had our usual walk and bought CAKES! I've just eaten mine, my favourite Apple and Raisin Danish. I'll call that lunch because I'm meeting a friend unexpectedly this afternoon at a GC so there will be more coffee and cake I expect while we catch up on each other's news. I need to look at the price of rakes as our old one (my late mother's) has finally had it.

@Badly_Maintained, as has been already so eloquently said, so sorry for your loss, and at a time when I'm sure you want to support your Mum, but also need to look after yourself.
I hope the words you wrote bring you comfort.

As so often good and bad news going hand in hand. You have the winter to recover, and look forward to spring, always brings renewed hope.

@Penny_Forthem glad your OH is all clear.

Afternoon all. Sunny but bitterly cold day here. We are not used to so low temperature before mid January. It's Friday and everything is easier today. I promised you to tell one more peculiar tradition, which is still very vivid here and in Slovenia, Christmas wheat. Twelve days before Christmas (St Lucy day), we sow wheat in small pots. Every day represent one month of following year, and if your wheat is green and lavish on Christmas day, whole next year will be abundant and rich. It's beautiful center piece with candle in the middle, on the Christmas table. If you don't have time to do this, it's possible to buy already sown in every shop or GC. After holidays I put my pots in the garden, and birds, sparrows especially, eat all green leaves.

This is my sown today, ...

                  tgtg.jpg

... and it should look like this, so finger cross.

That's a lovely tradition @Ante1 but I don't think I've ever seen wheat seeds sold here in home gardener sized packets.

Thank you @Obelix-Vendée. We can buy it only at this time just for this purpose. Actually, on the back is wrote that it can't be use for human or animal feeding. I'll not bake a lot of bread from those three little pots.

                        Afternoon all.

Firstly my thoughts go out to @Badly_Maintained as others have said, take your time to recover and be kind to yourself.

@Ante1 - what a lovely tradition - no pressure for a healthy show!

The annual leave planning was, indeed, a super puzzle! Interesting how very few people want leave in October and November (apart from half term). More for me!

I hope everyone is doing ok. Let the weekend commence!

What an interesting tradition, @Ante1, I also enjoyed the pictures of the snow.
What can I say, @Badly_Maintained, a great relief that your medical problem was caught in time, and you are now starting your recovery. But so sad to lose your father. Wishing you strength to remember the happy times and to give thanks for the time you had together.
Very pleased to hear that your OH’s scan came back clear, @Penny_Forthem, what a relief.
Hope your throat improves soon, @Ladybird4. I find Covonia cough medicines very good, not much in them to cause harm and they do taste delicious!
I’m just back from Christmas lunch with our local women’s group. A posh hotel overlooking the sea, the food was delicious and the company very entertaining. To top it off, I won a prize in the raffle, I’m not usually lucky at those, but I got a voucher for afternoon tea for two at the hotel. Very excited about that, I shall take OH some time in the New Year.
It’s been damp and foggy all day here, rather miserable but we’ve got all the Christmas lights on now, and that is going a long way to mitigating the gloom.
                          Take care, all.

Love the Winter Wheat tradition @Ante1. We will look forward to regular updates. My Amaryllis has taken an age to peek through but just as I was about to go and complain at Tesco - where I bought it, the tiniest of green tips peeked through. It will probably grow like mad now.
