Another dull, grey, still day tho we did have some blue bits and sunshine early on. I'm pottering again and hoping to find my white string for more candle wicks. @Ladybird4 Linalool allergy is quite common and I have an eczema type rash on my right hand which I'm sure is caused by a reaction to some old cleaning product. Serves me right for not wearing gloves I suppose.

I remember Joyce too and with great fondness. She was lovely.

Lots of bird activity here too @Allotment Boy and I even found a peacock butterfly in the annex this afternoon. I've put it outside on some yellow daisies so it can feed.

@Penny_Forthem if you don't plant them they'll die. If you do, they may not flower this spring but will at least live to flower another year.

@Busy-Lizzie I found both spring onions (cébettes) and the rounder young French onions (same flavour) in Leclerc in La Roche yesterday but don't often see them in Leclerc in Luçon but can find very skinny ones at the Vietnamese grocer. I don't often see whole duck so, when I do, I get one and stick it in the freezer.

Afternoon everyone- you are chatty today!

Weather looks ‘orrible to start the New Year. Work is going to be a slog this week as it’s extremely busy, staff sickness is rife, the Ambulance service has declared a major incident, and we are all back in masks because of Flu. I’m home from today’s shift and the ‘loungewear’ is on!

Enjoy your evening folks - whether NYE has meaning, is celebrated or not.

I do feel for you, @AuntyRach. Make the most of your evening at home ( I too am in lounge wear!) Collected my prescription on the way home, and popped into the little independent DIY shop in our nearby town. What a treasure trove! I got the new sink plunger I needed (actually cheaper than the big box stores) and OH was very impressed by the wide range of range of tools and odds and ends. We came out with several things we hadn’t realised we needed, and I’ve got some sachets of dye to refresh a couple of pairs of cord trousers. Both of us agreed that we should make more use of the local shops while they still exist, rather than always trekking the eight miles to the out of town retail estate.
Thank you, @Tui34, for the timely mention of the Prosecco in the fridge! I’ve retrieved a bottle of sparkling wine from the ‘cellar’ ( aka the shelf in the utility room ) and popped it in the fridge. I’m not planning on staying up, but I shall treat myself to a glass during the evening, and have another one with tomorrow’s lunch. Don’t know what we are having yet, but it won’t be turkey!

We're having duck a l'orange, followed by a salted caramel pud and a cointreau coffee. If that doesn't make me sleep, nothing will. We also have a good bottle of fizz, but I am wary as it gives me hiccups!!
Nothing grabs us on mainstream TV after Christmas university challenge. Netflix or Amazon to the rescue, I hope. I hope not to see midnight!
Tomorrow will be a stomp in the hills with the dogs. I need it. I have been sitting doing family history all afternoon.
@AuntyRach I don't know how you all keep going. I'll raise a glass to you and the NHS :ccheers:
And, as it may well be a new Wakey thread tomorrow, I wish all of you, near and far, a most peaceful, healthy and slug free New Year.

@Penny_Forthem, I will be watching the quizzes tonight but, like you, nothing grabs me after that. I have some Prosecco, courtesy of one of my nieces, in the fridge which I will drink this evening but I suspect I will be in the Land of Nod when Big Ben bongs! I'll join you in a toast to @AuntyRach and all who work in the NHS.

Having a cuppa before dinner which will now be minus the hot and sour soup as I can't cope with a 3 course feast. All pottering done and now we and the house are all clean. No idea what we'll be watching tonight but nothing scheduled grabs us.

OH likes to mark midnight with some fizz, Possum has white sage to smudge the house and I'll be doing the old Irish trick of opening the front door to let the old year out and the new year in. I do hope none of the neighbours goes mad and lets off fireworks. No ban this year as it's been so wet.

Tomorrow is looking calm and mild, Thursday horrendous with rain and strong winds and Friday very cold.

Whatever the weather, I wish you all a good evening and a happy and healthy new year for you, your near and dear and your gardens. Special thoughts as always to those bereaved or ill and to those who have to work thru this period to care for others.
