We started the day with thick fog but ended up with sunshine. DIL due to arrive later so I am hoping the fog doesn't descend again before she gets here.
Met a friend for coffee and cake at one of our local GC.s but disappointingly their sale had already finished. My sole purchase was a very interesting packet of fly papers - not. We have been plagued with fungus gnats in the house since I split and repotted an indoor spider plant. I think my mistake was to use my own compost instead of sterile bought compost since we'd never had the problem before. Sticky (but safe to use) yellow papers are hanging on sticks everywhere! I'll probably have to repot the plants next week but for now they're sulking in the cold porch!

Time to take a breather I think @Busy-Lizzie. There is a busy growing season looming on the horizon. @lizzie27, I get those annoying flies when I repot my cacti - in bought alpine compost. Someone told me once to pour boiling water through the compost which should destroy the pests.

Flypaper mention reminds me of Florence Maybrick, who was accused of murdering her husband by distilling arsenic from flypapers
          Florence Maybrick - Wikipedia
          The reason i know?
Dr Hopper, mentioned in the trial, moved to the house next door to my grandparents' farm. When he died, they bought a leather tub chair from the estate. I had it till last year, when it bit the dust. I did apply for it to go on the repair shop, but they weren't interested!!
We always used to joke that, maybe, Jack the Ripper had sat in that chair!!
          Well, sleep well, peeps!!

The sun stayed all day. Washing was nearly dry. Plenty of bulbs, buds and signs of life in the garden so that has been cheery.

            Have a pleasant evening everyone.

Good evening all. @Ergates and @AuntyRach, it's usual here that we work at Saturday if it's impossible to work one day at week. It's not very often, but it happens. It doesn't need to be immediately first following Saturday, but one during the semester.
I just came home form unofficial neighbor gathering. We had a nice chat and of course "coffee". It's quite cold outside, but now wind, and all my deliveries arrived at time. Now is time for small snack before bedtime.

I actually managed an hour in the garden this afternoon! Don’t know where I found the energy, but I headed out with the loppers and cut down a Portuguese laurel that was getting too big for its boots. Attacked a few rhododendrons sprouting out of the ground, plus a few brambles. Generated a decent pile of branches to shred for the green bin collection next week. First proper bit of gardening I’ve done for at least two months. I think my back will have something to say about it tomorrow. It was lovely out though, and I did enjoy myself.
It’s turned a lot colder now, plenty of stars visible and a very large full moon now rising in the sky.
That is interesting, @Ante1. I think there would be riots here if anyone suggested making up time at weekends for school closures! It probably wouldn’t work here, my grandsons always have sports and matches on Saturdays, which the youngest sees as a higher priority! Hope you enjoyed your bedtime snack. I’m afraid I had a glass of red wine and some chocolate! Not very healthy!

Good morning one and all. @Ergates, I was pleased I had managed that little bit of gardening I did yesterday when I checked my bin collection timetable - green bin day today. It is also general waste bin day too. I am on the Food Bank roster this morning and will be picking up my Bestie at 09:00.
@Penny_Forthem, that is a fascinating story about your grandparents' chair.

Good morning @Ladybird4 and all to follow. Another windy and cold morning. I must go in a few minutes. Today will go to SM and pick up few other things, so arrival home will be late afternoon. Luckily daylight is a longer by every day. Wish you all a nice day, keep warm and se you later.
@Ergates, Saturday is here also for sport and other activities, but school still have higher priority, and it happens once or twice during whole year.

                      Good morning to everyone!!

Still cold here with -1°C but the wind has dropped. The sun is having a day off today.

I beg to differ @Ergates but both red wine and dark chocolate is good for you. In moderation of course! Anyway, after your brave attack on the garden, you deserved it!

Morning all, another damp dull day here, must get into the garden though. I did my first volunteer day of the year yesterday. More Acer pruning, but as my wife pointed out, "now you're practiced you better finish the ones here"
I meant to say before re the LA fires, my wife has a cousin in Santa Clarita, the nearest threat to them was the Hurst fire. They said it was much closer than ever before and they had bags packed so they could leave at a moments notice. Thankfully not needed but very scary nevertheless .

Hello all! I wish I could do some gardening! It's so cold and the sun isn't going to put in an appearance today, just mist and fog.
Indoor jobs again - if i feel like it! we did the SM shop yesterday, there were very few people about, also got the wing mirrors fixed on the car for no charge! At least the car will be ready for it's trip to the UK at the end of February! Well, the ferry is booked and stopover hotel booked for a night as we would rather do the journey with a break as it's a fair old step from down here! We have friends who do it all in one go.
I think I'm going to have to put the birds on short rations soon, they are coming in from far and wide, that's the problem when you live in a very rural area!

Good morning. Supposed to be bright and sunny but it's grey and dull and very cold. OH has gone out to play golf but I'm surprised they're letting anyone on the fairways, let alone the greens. The wind is getting up too now so it'll be extra chilly out there.

More painting for me but woodwork this time and and touching up on walls if needed. No gardening or pruning while there's so much sog and frost about. The garden birds are very active so are on extra rations to help with nest building, egg laying and sitting.

I agree about the benefits of a glass of red wine and good quality chocs @Tui34 but none for me today as it's a thin day. Yoga this evening. One of the patch ladies laughed on Monday at the thought of me doing yoga. Damn cheek but I'm planning to stay fit and supple for many more years yet.

It's a gloomy old day here so sympathies to anyone who suffers from SAD. Best wishes, as always, to anyone with pain or worries or sadness due to post-op, illness or bereavement.

Morning all, started out a bit frosty but now it's very thick fog all around us, not nice at all.

@floralies, we now prefer to break long journeys with overnight stops, it makes them much more bearable.
Not sure what we'll do today, had hoped to do some gardening but if the fog doesn't lift, that won't happen.
Fingers crossed that the Israeli/Hamas ceasefire agreement holds, such a waste of life on both sides.

                              Have a good day folks.

It’s a beautiful morning here today. A frost, but a lovely blue sky and sunshine. Not quite as bitter cold as last week. It’s possible that it was foggy earlier but it wasn’t at 8 am.

It sounds like a staying put day for you @lizzie27 unless the sun manages to break through.

I’ll join you with crossed fingers and lots of prayers, but I’m not overly optimistic. So much tragic loss of life, I really do hope it holds.
