    Housework IS for Idiots @Ladybird4
Something to be done only in emergencies and when there is no alternative. My sister read an article once that said it was bad for your blood pressure, I’ve forgotten the reason or rationale, but we both took the warning seriously to heart

Our daughter & son-in-law have intermittent Internet access where they're living, south of Galway. Apparently the exchange is currently running on a diesel back-up generator which has 48 hours of fuel left... awkward for SIL as he works from home...

Maybe our very welcome Internet access is also temporary. If I disappear again, you'll know why...

Good to see you here @Liriodendron. I hope your Internet stays put. We were without electricity for 3 weeks in 1999 after a French hurricane and water for a few days. The village shop took cheques or cash. They wrote it all down. I had a swimming pool at that house so we had plenty of water for the loo. It was winter so didn't wash in the pool! I had a gas oven that used bottled gas and fireplaces.

I've finally finished pruning and tying in the Albertine rose and cutting back 2 honeysuckles and an overgrown ivy. I've tidied the laurel bed, cut down the 2 x group 3 Clematis and mulched it.

        Now for the ironing.

Good to read that your meds seem to be doing the trick @floralies. Lets hope that continues. Great to see you back @Liriodendron, gosh but you are having a rough time. I am sending positive thoughts to you for a quick re-connection of all your utilities and internet.
I am another who would love to see the retention of cash. I'm frequently at my local ATM but many shops now state that they will only accept card payments. I might be wrong here but I thought that shops only accepting cards are charged by the card companies for that facility. Don't quote me though, I might have made it up!

Did you manage to escape any vicious attacks from your Albertine rose @Busy-Lizzie? Well done on getting all that work completed.

I can remember when smaller shops would prefer cash, especially for low value purchases, because the retailers had to pay a percentage of card purchase to the credit card company. I’m sure there still is a charge, I’m sure they’re not doing it out of charity!
My biggest bugbear at the moment is the growing requirement to have a mobile phone, with ‘apps’ on it. I was told today that from April, Ryanair will no longer accept printed boarding documents. They will have to be on your phone, or there will be a financial penalty. My mobile phone is a Nokia ‘brick’, with no internet connection, ( I use it as a phone!) My iPad needs to connect to a wifi source, usually home, or coffee shops, so I couldn’t use that. I hope this isn’t a trend that will proliferate. Too dependent on consistent phone signal coverage, and of course, battery life.

Evening friends. Ooops I seem to have accessed bold print somehow - anyone know how to change it back to normal?

Glad to hear from @Liliodendron again, hope your internet stays working from now on for you, and yes we lost all power for 5 days (water for 4) after the big storm mid December, but being 'farming folk' and prepared, we fired up the generator to keep one or two essentials running. Water from the pond for the loo and being on the elderly list, I qualify for bottled water to be delivered thank goodness.

But what a week it has been, one storm after another it seems. Last Friday/Saturday they were predicting yet another storm for us today, but thankfully it seems to have stayed south of us. Hoping those of you living in the Devon/Cornwall/South Coast, IOW/channel areas have managed to survive without too much damage.

Sorry cant remember anything else that I intended to say, brain often gets a bit sluggish these days, so just sending good wishes to you all and healing thoughts to anyone in need.

Hi @Anna42 If you take a look at the top of your text box you will see a capital 'B' on the extreme left. If you click on that and start to type your post, then your text should go back to normal density lettering. Sorry you had the difficult situation for so long.It makes me ashamed that I ranted on about having a 12 hour power cut which is pathetic compared to the length of time you (and @Liriodendron) were without.
Referring to the Apps @Ergates, I went into my Bank which has been that since Adam was a lad.I wanted to move some money and was told that they couldn't do it there but I could if I had the App. I honestly felt like saying I would withdraw ALL my money and keep it in a sock under my mattress. That would probably have needed an App too. I do have to say that for once I was speechless.

I refuse to download apps onto any of our machines! I only do banking or shopping with credit cards on the ‘house’ computer, and only via the websites, not Apps. So far, I haven’t been pressured to use apps, although I notice that some special offers are only available via an App. So I don’t buy them.
I took a photo of my M and S Sparks card on my non smart phone, as they wouldn’t provide me with a physical card. When I’m asked for my card in store, I do take a perverse pleasure in saying it’s on my phone, and opening it in the picture gallery. Seems to work when they scan it!
So glad we haven’t to suffer the prolonged disruption to power, water and communication that some of you have had to put up with. Please let this winter be over soon.

Good morning all. It's another sunny and warm morning, almost like late spring. Yesterday was the warmest day ever in January, we had 21℃. I hope one delivery will arrive today, it's late one day. I'll finish my cup of tea and start with a day. Wish you all a nice day and see you later.

Good morning @Ante1 and all dropping in soon. Rude awakening this morning as Cricket decided it was his breakfast time and I was a bit late in rising. 21°C! I wish. Actually @Ante1, you have had extremes of temperature in a very short space of time which must be confusing for your plants.

                                Good morning all.

@Ladybird4, @Tui34 was here on Sunday. I hope she isn't ill.

                                We have a tiny frost.

We're going to the pub up the road for lunch again. We enjoyed it last week.

Should be able to do some gardening but I've run out of bins. I have one full of rotted leaf mould so I could do some mulching first if there is a clear area to mulch onto.
