Hi TG, thanks for the reasurance regarding Jungle Seeds. I'm just curious to see how successful I can be with regard to sowing and growing Bananas so we'll see how I go this year. Nobody has yet answered my question on when to sow!!

    I didn't know that about Pete............he never mentioned it!!!:D

Are you getting at what I think you're getting at? Well I have got a 60 x 60ft, pretty much empty front garden still. I won't get to grips with that until I finish getting the back garden sorted. :)

Don't know if you 'nanas will stand up to the weather here though! :heehee:

I'd sow immediately, well half of the seed of each, and keep half till early spring.
Maybe soaking the seed in hot water for 24 hrs.
Some say you need varying night temps to day temps, it gets very technical if you really get into it.:D

My personal thoughts are, if the seed is fresh it will grow, if its not, it wont.:)

They were to start with, I soaked them overnight and put them in the airing cuboard for a couple of days. Then into the propogater in March. When nothing happened after a month they went outside in a coldframe over the summer. Well at least you know not to do as I did :dbgrtmb:

I received the Banana seeds in this mornings post. The advice given is to soak them for 48 hours which is fine. But having put them in water I find that the Coccinea seeds are floating on the top. I find that worrying as I thought that a general rule of gardening seeds that float are unviable.:D

Coconuts float, otherwise they would have to be carried by Swallows for distribution.

Good point, Ziggy. Coconuts have adapted to be afloat at sea for up to 30 days thereby increasing it's chances of propagating on different areas of islands etc. The trouble is that Bananas use a different method of spreading their seed..........animals and birds eating the fruits and excreting the seeds far from the original spot. That's why I'm slightly apprehensive as to whether or not the Coccinea seeds should float. The other two varieties of Banana seeds I've got have sunk to the bottom but the Coccinea seeds are still floating on the surface.
I've sent Jungle seeds a e-mail asking about it but so far haven't had a reply. I'm just wondering if any one has had experience of this.

I believe it was Harry that was saying "Ditch the Floaters" last year, but you never quite know what the boy is thinking about:heehee:

Because I was worried about the germination viability of the Musa Coccinea seeds that floated in the water whilst soaking them I e-mailed Jungle seeds to ask them about it and I got a very prompt and polite answer back:
