    Thank you @shiney
I think I might have fallen for the 'dead' phone line! I no longer have a landline phone plugged in as all I got were sales and nuisance calls.
I get so many emails still inc from HMRC and DVLA too. Apparently I have an oustanding fine to pay for continually driving into a congestion charge area despite my car not leaving home! Mind you I suppose I could pay it if I claimed the 100's and 100's of pounds worth of prizes that Ive supposedly won.

Judging by reading some of this I don't really get that many scam calls, but I am thinking of getting rid of the land line as I very rarely use it.

I'm basically paying to just have it hanging on the wall.

I don't think a lot of people use the land lines now. But if you are with Virgin, the phone line rental is part of the package and you can't delete it. Anyway it was when I checked this a couple of years back.
Also if the mobile phone signal goes down in your area you still have a phone. Some phone lines are now are connected on your internet cable, VOIP( Voice internet), but if you have a power cut I presume you don't get a phone signal like standard line.

Not got round to mentioning it to virgin media yet.
Didn't know you can't get rid of the phone, I got rid of the TV a few years ago.

We're with virgin and only broadband from the start we didn't have the phone or TV just broadband, we still have BT get free calls weekends.
As @HarryS said it's good to have a landline as well.

I get scam calls but I just hang up or if I'm in the mood, give them a hard time. I used to get lots and now it's down to only about once a week. I'm keeping my landline. Even if I got a scam call more often, I will not give it up. It works when there is a power outage. It is the number all my friends and family call. My cell on the other hand, is rarely turned on. Indeed, I only bought it for road emergency use or travel because the cord on my landline isn't long enough to stretch beyond the end of the drive :)

Almost everyone I know has a landline and they use that as their main phone. Both our lines are used a lot and the directory in both phones are full - 200 numbers in each. I've just checked the logs and so far today (1.45 p.m.) we have had 11 incoming calls and 7 outgoing calls. Both lines have a freebie limit with mine being 500 calls per month and Mrs Shiney's being 500 minutes per month. Hers includes freebie calls to mobiles but mine doesn't. so I make any calls to mobiles on her phone. :blue thumb:

I don't keep my mobile on when I'm at home. I only made one text last month.!!

We only really need it if we are out and about in the car. Originally I only had one so that I was contactable at all times for all the parents that I was contracted to.

We get free landline calls all week for up to an hours duration, but not to mobiles though.

Interesting. I have BT and my landline has unlimited local calls and some free hours of long distance. I don't recall the number of hours as I never went over the limit.

We had a major power out here a few years back and all of the cell phones couldn't get a signal and I was grateful for the landline. :)

Edited: unlimited local calls no matter if it is to another landline or mobile

We don't have a limit on the number of calls we make.....being a bit of a talker ;) I just keep an eye on the clock ...58 minutes and I end the call and then redial to continue our chat!!:heehee:

For us BT calls at the weekend are free for an hour, then can call back again but only to another landline number like upsydaisy said. Don't use my mobile for calls only for emergencies. Only started to have a mobile because incase i needed it when walking the boys.

Had some "Herbert" ring me today saying he was from "Domestic Appliances" and was calling about the cover that needed to be renewed. Apparently for my washing machine that I bought in 2020. He had name, address and phone number. Snag was I bought the washing machine in 2017/18 and he had no idea what make or model it was.
