Thanks @Kristen I'm actually feeling a little bit better about my purchase. I got five delphiniums (Guardian Blue), three hollyhocks (Peaches n Dreams), and six echinacea (Cheyenne Spirit). They were listed on ebay as 'garden ready' (hence my expectation that they would be more established), with no further information. They were from a local seller, so I saved myself the postage fee, otherwise I normally wouldn't have bothered.
They are lovely varieties though, so if I can get them to flower next year (slugs, or no slugs) then I will be more than happy. I'm optimistic that the echinacea might flower this year (look up 'Cheyenne Spirit - they are beautiful!). The others, I will just try to keep them going and hope for better things next summer.

I splashed out on Nemaslug last year, and treated the veg patch. So far this year my veg are fairly slug free, although lots of snails around, whereas the flower border has lots of slugs as well as snails.
