The Welsh name for July is Gorffenaf, which literally means 'End of Summer', so August is Autumn

And there's a saying in Welsh 'Daw Awst Daw'r Nos' - 'August brings the night' ... because up until August we don't see much darkness - then you notice the days drawing in.
I noticed tonight it was really dusk at 9 o'clock..

Many years ago, around here, the school summer break went longer into September so that the kids could help with the hop picking.
Not many hops grown here now.

In Finland the school holidays still follow the agricultural cycle. It makes sense, in the olden days kids would not have shown up anyways because they were needed at home to work.

Schools break at end of May for all the hard work in planting and tending the plots during the short but vigorous growing season, and the reconvene in mid- August until a week's break in September still humorously called "potato harvesting break".

September is literally called "Autumn Month" and October very descriptively "Muddy snow month". Always looking at the bright side of life

Today I am exploring ways to install another operating system onto my Android tablet - to copy my desktop - so if the electric does goes off I can still access the internet. Just found an app called Limbo PC - the instructions for installation are:

To use this application you need:

          - A brain
          - A system image of the system to emulate (iso / img)
          - Patience
          - A powerful device

          I'm not sure about 1 and 3 - but here we go...

School holidays are a few weeks earlier in Scotland. We always went on holiday to the relatives then when English schools were still having classes. Then we traditionally have an October week off, known as tattie holliday back in the day when families would go off to the countryside to pick the potatoes. Bit before my time.

Currently making some yellow chilli jam, all produce home grown. Apart from the vinegar, salt and sugar and sweet peppers

Inbetween gardening and family Zooms We went for a walk to the village. I stopped the traffic in the village to usher six ducks across the road to the pond and then helped push a broken down car out of the way as it was blocking the junction. It was only a small car but I wasn't going to do it on my own so a passing cyclist (young fellow in proper cycling gear) did it with me. :pathd:

There will be a slight delay as I'm still composing it. :)

Saw a bit of the mens elite road race that finished in glasgow. It was a 270km race, rather them than me

Visited my dear brother this morning ,he never ceases to amaze me how he can ( on most occasions) still bring out his cheeky sense humour despite having to cope with all that life has dished out to him. He's my hero.:wub2:

It makes me realise that I ( and a few others that I know) should stop and count our blessings before grumbling about our 'woes'.

Had a lovely stroll through Winchester afterwards , the farmers market was on...so plenty of tasters on offer.

We sat out in the lovely Abbey Gardens with a takeaway lunch. I did a bit of undercover seed collecting from a few spent blooms in the displays.

Tidied up the conservatory - bought some plants indoors - I'm quite pleased about how it looks now:

                      1.jpg

I've decided that the other half of the conservatory - with a tiled floor - will become my new greenhouse. I've seen some wooden staging on Amazon that will fit in quite nicely against both side walls. I'm going to paint the staging 'Autumn Gold' to match the colour of the garden shed/fencing etc. Colour co-ordination and all that...

Thanks yes he is...I tell him he's my best brother ...;) he's the only one I have.:heehee:

It's a cruel illness, I try to imagine what it must be like to have a head full of.....no memories at all. What is in his head??? :noidea:

He has a little cloudy long term memory but you have to instigate a conversation to 'try' and rekindle any of them. Short term memory is now only 5- 10 minutes ....if he's lucky.

I recently watched Elizabeth Is Missing...and I could feel the frustration that Glenda Jackson portrayed with such heartbreaking accuracy through her character Maud.

According to a local Councillor, the road is closed due to a serious house fire. Posting on social media, he said ‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌“Connah’s Quay High Street is closed due to a serious house fire...."

Reported by local media - this is what I consider 'cutting edge' journalism...
