Your Day (apart from gardening) - what took place?

I think this thread is being diverted from it's main purpose and title and becoming a political discussion about Trump etc.......which is not what it's purpose is. So if we want to continue "politicking" I will leave it to someone to start a new thread with an appropriate title.

 

Not being at work today, I decided to rejuvenate my Kitchen chairs. They're solid wood, well made, with padded seats but were looking a bit "tired". So, as the weather was not encouraging me to go out into the garden, I rubbed the chairs down with wire wool, stained them in a Peruvian Mahogany colour and have left them to dry overnight. Then when I get in from a day in Chester tomorrow I will use a Soft Satin varnish to bring them back to life again. They're really nice style of chair and too good to let them become shabby.

 

Well, after a mug of tea, feeding myself and the cats, sorting out my newly arrived Dierama's, I put some ragged jeans and shirt on to start varnishing the Kitchen chairs. The stain I'd put on them had dried nicely so the varnish I've got, [Yacht Clear Satin], brushed on nicely. The bad news is that it takes 16 to 24 hours to dry and they advised putting two coats of varnish on, so it could be Friday before the chairs are done. Then I've got my eye on the Kitchen table!!

 

How do you keep the cats off them?

I'm about to do a little researching this morning on bus time tables and I'm listening to the tide turning

 

I've removed the fitted chair cushions from the chairs, Shiney, so the cats would fall through the chair frame and they've sussed that out I've actually only varnished 3 out of the four chairs, leaving one for them to jump on. But on Friday, my day off, I will be starting on the Kitchen table, rubbing it down with wire wool, staining it the same Peruvian Mahogany colour. I then have to leave it to dry for 24 hours, taking the job into Saturday. On Saturday I will apply the first coat of Satin finish Yacht Varnish, after first tipping the table on end to stop the cats jumping onto the freshly varnished top. I'll also put two chocks of wood between the edge of the table and the floor keeping it off the floor with a plastic sheet under it. So it'll be another 24 hours before the first coat of varnish is dry taking it into Sunday. Then I'll put the second coat o f varnish on and leave that to dry into Monday. Along the way I''ll be varnishing the 4th and final Kitchen chair.

 

In my Lounge stands a small circular, ornate, but simple, wooden table which I wouldn't swap for any money.
When my Wife was ill she still tried to keep Life normal and so I would take her to one of her favourite places, Conway. We were walking through the High Street when she saw the table in the window of an "Antique" shop. It was shabby, tired, and I wouldn't have given a penny for it, but my Wife saw something in it and asked me to buy it. I paid over the odds for it but it was what my Wife wanted. On the way home she explained that she wanted to clean the table, sand it down, re-stain it and varnish it. So for the next few weeks my Wife, in failing health, kept doggedly bringing the table back to life, with me taking over when she got tired. The table stands in the Lounge in pride of place and we called it the Conway Table. Now I see something in it and it's a reminder of my Wife and the clever eye and mind she had, and gives me some happiness that she saw the Table in it's now finished state before I lost her............wouldn't swap it for the World.

 

That's what we're here for, Ian. I had my fill of Managers Meetings, especially those Managers who "boasted" how they were going to speak their mind in the meetings, and then when the meeting was on they were the quietest in the room
