What passes for excitement here this morning took the form of a parcel - a new spokeshave.
Ordered yesterday, it arrived today, ´fraid I´m not buying British now, it´s slow, expensive and uncertain.
As no postman would venture up " The Campo" the post arrives at my agent´s office in the Plaza.
Tootling down on the Benelli, sans mask for the first time, I noticed as I burbled along the main street, which yesterday seemed full of carefree unmasked strollers, that today everyone wore a sense of purpose - and a mask.

Obedient to local custom, I parked on the pavement doffed my helmet and donned my mask.
Retrieving my parcel I repaired to the Plaza bar, and discussed the finer points of my purchase with the landlord. We agreed it had both merits and defects, was probably able to be fettled, and at 25 quid was about all you could expect.

Since it obviously needed to be sharpened, (the blade had been roughly ground slightly concave) my thoughts turned to my other old (anything up to 200 years) wooden spokeshaves languishing amongst the debris of my toolbox, remnants of bygone days -- perhaps something could be resurrected ...? Maybe an interesting comparison could be made ?
After grinding and polishing on the strop, the new blade works well, how long it holds an edge will be interesting to discover.
The old wooden spokeshave, its splits in the handle carefully screwed together and its blade dressed, ground and stropped, cuts really well, and is a thing of modest beauty.
It will be the one I reach for first.

Excellent des res´s for the feathered ones, hope they appreciate the effort.
If you get no tenants, maybe consider fixing a piece of dowel just under the entrance, so they can perch and then hop in, rather than having to fold their wings and enter at speed, then avoid hitting the back wall !

It doesn't matter about a landing pad, they're used to boxes like that.

A dowel also gives the fledglings a place to open their wings and have a preliminary flap ...
And then retreat within if their courage fails them.
(I particularly like that bit ...)
But I´m quite prepared to accept that in the general nest-box gestalt, it is an up-market, elitist avian status symbol --
I´m sure that whatever the "Landlord" decides, will unerringly reveal his political and moral position...

I did think of dowels, but the majority of designs online didn't seem to have them. I could add them I suppose, although I would need to get some dowel and glue.

@Fat Controller it's not necessary at all they'll manage fine without the perch. They try their wings in the box.the box is that shape because of the camera.
