Many thanks DHR for your comment. My experience as quoted must be forty odd years ago. Of course things have changed since then. Without going too deep. It was very much the scene that TV comedy writeres might choose. Especially for club members, come Sunday. Typical. " Off to the clubouse luv, back for dinner" several pints later, back home a bit worse for wear. Dinner and forty winks in the armchair, then. " Just popping down to the clubhouse" Several more jars were downed. Hence my term....boozers.

Yes I agree with you regarding eminent members. Prior to entering the world of horticulture including groundsmanship, I was traffic cop. Believe me I could write a book on the subject. In fact my family's GP was the local police surgeon and he gained the MBE. Jokingly I often wonder if the award was for being the highest stopped driver, over the limit. Naturally having stopped a driver for drink, you couldn't simply say. Now drive carefully and don't get caught again. The van had to be called out and Doctor, Judge, Magistrate, Councillor. They had to go to the nick. Their vehicles had to be made secure and the custody officer at the nick would have to phone the wives. Evening Mrs..... Central police here. Can you come and collect your husband.

It was fun at times to see the facial reaction in court when the magistrate or judge spotted you and flashbacks happened. Actually after some time, I began to notice that. "Charles Brown. You are charged with driving blah blah whilst under the influence of drink. It became the norm. AS soon as you the cop was recognised. I will issue a warning to you this time. Don't drink and drive. So Charlie Brown gets off.

Back to my job application. My first thoughts at the interview. Bloody hell, how many bosses am I going to have. No thanks. Friends this is all true.

Times have changed for golf clubs. I've only been playing since I took early retirement, but that was twenty years ago. Most golf clubs back then had full memberships. To join it cost me a joining fee, plus as much again for first year's membership.

But times rapidly changed. "Pay and play," courses have come along and I think much of it due to the economic situation, particularly the cost of housing. Young adults now find it very difficult to find the money to join a golf club.
So most clubs, like ours have long dropped the joining fee and are doing "deals," to attract younger members. The balance can still be quite wrong. "Back in the day," when members reached retirement age they got a discount on their membership, the thinking from pre-WW2 days, being that old age pensions were not very well off. But it's those who have retired now that are mostly better off than young people. Our discount dropped from 40% to 20% a couple of years ago. It would be difficult to get enough votes to have it completely removed.

The breathaliser too has had an affect. It's a case of "one drink and home." Our club doesn't remain open late into the evening as do pubs. There's no point paying bar staff when there may be fewer than ten people in after 8.00 p.m. Same with Sky Sports. We've got rid of that, it was £9,000 a year. Most people who are that interested in watching football can watch it at home.

Golf clubs are closing right left and centre, both private and municipal. Many have huge debts with their assets used as security. Fortunately we haven't, because we've sensible people running the club. Some of our income comes from hiring out the function rooms for weddings and funerals.

Made a redcurrant pudding, it's the same as a summer pudding, but with only redcurrants.

Waiting for our new tv to arrive, between 6 and 9pm today.:)

Too wet for anything to be done in the garden, so I did some ironing.

We have a rule in this house (apparently) that if you're daft enough to buy anything that needs ironing, you iron it yourself. All my wife's clothes come out of the tumble drier (she knows exactly when to take them out) get hung up on a hanger on a door frame and any creases drop out. The washing machine and tumble drier seem to be on all day.

My day to day stuff gets washed and tumble dried and ends up on a chair in the front room on a daily basis. But not cotton or cotton mix shirts. (short sleeve at this time of year, long sleeve in the winter). I can't be bothered to iron a few at a time. So I let them build up in the laundry basket, none are worn for more than a few hours a day. So individually they don't get much wear.
Mostly I wear "scruff" around the house, it means I can go straight out into the garden without changing my clothes, then come in a few hours later, shower and put on clean "scruff," I only get changed if I'm going out. (going down to the village for something essential in the middle of a DIY job doesn't count, I don't get changed to do that). But I was down to my last three shirts.

So I emptied the laundry basket of them and took them to the "laundry department." (I dumped them in front of the washing machine in the kitchen this morning). So had them all to iron this afternoon after the football.
The majority of my shirts are Ben Shermans. Button down collars. But they're vintage, I haven't bought one for ten years since the prices kept going up as the quality kept coming down. I think other people thought the same. Ben Sherman had a store in the Trafford Centre, but it closed down and they moved to being just a concession in Debenhams.

I've also got two shirts I bought in C&A, they too are in good condition. Now how long has C&A been closed in the UK, nearly twenty years?

I despair of the quality of much of the stuff that's sold today.

Anyway, I ironed eighteen shirts. I actually don't mind ironing my stuff, it's just shirts and chinos.

Excellent idea, it will certainly deter any housebreaker, they'll just have to use those convenienly placed ladders and get in through a bedroom window!

                  Whoops!

Sorry, but being serious, anything we can do to help make our premises secure is a worthwhile idea.

                  Hope it all goes well.
Instruction books seem to have about 100 pages on 'elf n' safety you're supposed to wade through before you get to anything that helps you. Even worse are those appliances that don't have one like our Humax PVR, just it on a naffin' DVD that you have to print off or work with it on your laptop.
Everything seems to have wifi now, like my camera and even my leccy piano! I'll never use it on either.

The best thing about the Bosh washing machine we bought last year, with all its bells and whistles, was that it has a light inside the drum so you don't leave a sock in there when you empty it. Now that's really useful.

My wife is very "anti-computer technology," though conversely, she's very much for new kitchen gadgets. We have a big screen TV with Virgin cable in our lounge with a Tivo box. She complains about how difficult it is to work, but won't let me order the free upgrade as there's some films on it she'd lose, "which she hasn't got round to watching."
In the front room where we have a smaller 32" HD TV, with a Humax HDR, a CD/DVD player, a VHS recorder (still got a lot of favourite films on tapes as well as DVDs) and a sound bar with a bass speaker under it. There's a "snake pit" scart leads behind it connected to a now vintage auto selector, so whichever remote you press, that bit of kit comes on or changes from what you were using previously. This is pretty ancient technology now. I can also play mp3s or videos on a stick in the side of the TV. I've also got a separate hard drive to which I've copied favourite films from the Humax in case that crashes.
I had to make a little table out of some hardwood, to sit the TV on to accommodate the sound bar. The only cable visible is the one to the fan.

My tenor sax has to live next to the TV so my wife doesn't bang it with the vacuum cleaner.(I clean that bit behind there).

                        P1010692.JPG

I can also push the sound from the TV through this selector, in our big wall unit, (now forty years old, don't they go in and out of fashion?) connected to my vintage hi-fi and big speakers. It's mainly to swop the sound around between my two vintage jukebox wall box selectors and the i-pods, the cassette deck, turntable and the radio.

                        P1010693.JPG

There's a lot of kit, but the room always looks reasonably tidy.

@Doghouse Riley it looks very tidy. We've got a snakes pit at the back of the tv. The sound system is very old and falling apart slowly. He has a fire tv box, which we don't really need now, but he can't get the sound from it now through the TV.

                          I don't understand a lot of it.

As for kitchen gadgets, I'd like one of those air fryers. Don't know if i could get it in the cubboard when I'm not using it, they're big.

Do you mean one like this?
It's a Cook's Essentials. The basket can go into the dishwasher after use.

                          P1010697.JPG

It replaced an Actifry. That's a long story, we had one of the first ones, which proved faulty and started to smoke, so Actify replaced it, but she never trusted it, she called it a "wifeyfry," so it's in a box in the garage somewhere. This one sits on one of the worktops. We don't have a hob, just an oven, but we've two induction hobs, rarely use two, which can go straight into a drawer immediately after use as they don't get hot.

Most of her gadgets can fit in that two tier huge carousel in the corner of the kitchen. You just push the front in and it locks and spin it. To close you just carry on spinning until it's done a full circle and it automatically closes.

Yes it's something like that. I've got a double oven and i use the smaller one to cook chips in but i think it takes too much electric to do it.
