As soon as she finished University she went off to New Zealand with her then-boyfriend. They broke up but she stayed out there for several years continuing her studies. She then went to Hong Kong for a spell teaching English She then had a spell in Taiwan and in China before heading off to Chile with another fella. She then came home to work at a London University before returning to Edinburgh at the beginning of the year. After a struggle, she got a flat off Leith Walk and has been working for Herriot Watt and Robert Gordon's, but now she has to head off to finish her fieldwork.

Harlow Carr, a RHS garden near Harrogate. It was a very wet day but the garden was glorious, especially the woodland and arboretum parts. Woods just feel so magical when it's raining, the soft ground smells just right and the rain sounds so relaxing. :)

Taking the A1 from Newcastle is fun, the road signs just say "SOUTH". No finer details are given, anything that direction is "South" and that's all one needs to know :heehee:

Miraculously escaped the RHS garden centre with just Ceropegia Woodii, a houseplant I have always wanted. Oh, and pink deadheaders that will hopefully decrease the number of kitchen scissors forgotten around the garden.

Thawed for a bit in the cafe, regular tea for one was £4 and as a treat, the Child got a speciality tea for £5.35. My small cup of coffee was £4. Honestly, can normal people really afford these prices?

Anyways, it was a lovely day out, the garden has various Acers that are truly remarkable just now. Oh, and there was a vegetable contest, again something I have read about but never seen in real life. :) They also had a free apple identification service with most enthusiastic experts cutting the apples, browsing books and debating.

          Needle felting :)

It's a totally new craft to me and a lot of fun. Basically, a piece of wool is rolled into a ball and then poked with a special needle until it becomes felted, and then bits are added for shape and colour. I will need to raid the garage for some dark wire for the legs and practise with the beaks.

Bullfinch and skinny Wren, Blue tit is nearly ready :) Oh, and I need reading glasses

@Selleri that's really good. How do you do yours, is it by hand or machine?

              Can get a machine

We went to a fireworks display. We had planned to park in the nearby car park which would have cost us 3 quid but I found a free parking space down the sea front. And we'd planned to pay to go into the venue which would have cost us a tenner but as we got close we saw the queue was a mile long and we had a better view from the main road outside. So all in all we got the best view and saved ourselves about 13 quid. That'll cover our Sunday kebab tea tomorrow.

                  Iniquitous! :hate-shocked:

Even the National Trust don't charge anywhere near that amount. Coffee shops and cafes have regular overheads to pay (I still think some charge too much, but I'm a grumpy old man :old:) but with the RHS they have already charged you an entrance fee.

                  But lovely photos. :blue thumb:

Thanks! By hand. It's really very simple, just a bit of wool, a needle and inspiration from bird books. :) This is the kit I have https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B087THQB5R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only moan is that the kit doesn't include black wool, I tried mixing the darkest green and brown for the bullfinch's head but it's not the same. My favourite bird is blackbird...

@Selleri that's a good kit that you have. Can't you order more wool by itself?

Yes, felting wool is readily available online.

Because the actual amount needed for such small decorations we are making is minimal, the kit we have will last forever- the bags look nearly untouched after three birds, two mice and plenty of mess accidentally swept into the bin. I will however send for some black wool for my Blackbird project :)

Today I had a Skype chat with my niece, 7. She liked our birds and is quite interested in this craft so Santa has a tick on his list. :)
